Accepting a job knowing you will leave after a couple weeks?

    Hi,

I'm waiting to hear from a company about a position/interview that may arise in the coming weeks.

However, in mean time I should find work. Is it normal for people to apply elsewhere knowing they will most likely jump ship within weeks for a better job?

I kind of feel it's dishonest but then again I need to work and earn.

You are waiting to hear about a job. It might not go the way you think. If you've no job you should take what you can, when you can. You might find the "lesser" job to be much better than you thought and the better option in the long run.

Don't worry about pissing off management, if they need to get rid of you they won't lose any sleep.

You'll piss of the manager and won't get a great reference but apart from that..

Reference probably won't be necessary as you'll hardly be putting it on your CV.

The awkward part would be looking for time off to go for the interview for other job.

I know exactly what you mean, however if you need to collect social welfare you are probably obliged to take it.
Not sure how you explain to any other potential employer why you are so willing to jump ship though, I guess you stress to them how important working is to you etc. and how they are the ideal place for you to work long term.

It did take a job knowing I really wanted another one which I was waiting for news about. I was 3 weeks in the job and did lots of induction training etc. I felt guilty at the time but you never know what will happen. Yes manager was mad but I explained pay was better and future prospects where better and he gave the guy 2nd on his list the job.

A bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush :)

Good luck and well done finding work :)
