Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Mirror plans new National - Never Say Die!

    Press Gazette:

    A team of Mirror journalists have been seconded to work on a new, cut-price national newspaper, well-placed sources have told Press Gazette.
    The small team is being led by Sunday editor Alison Phillips along with executive editor Barry Rabbetts.
    Several well-placed sources have told Press Gazette there is a team working on the project, and the company has confirmed it is "exploring alternative revenue streams".
    Two of the sources suggested that if the newspaper does come into existence, only a small team will work exclusively on it.
    It is understood the cut-price newspaper would seek to replicate the success of The Independent's i newspaper.
    Launched in 2010, the i has a weekday price of 40p and an average daily circulation of 273,961, compared with The Independent's 56,005.
    The Daily Mirror currently costs 60p, making it the most expensive red-top tabloid, and the same price as the mid-market Daily Mail.
    In October, Northern and Shell halved the price of its red-top Star newspapers, with the daily now costing 20p.
    The title's average circulation in November was 450,045, up from 403,380 in September, according to ABC.
    And the company has also introduced price cuts at the Express, with the Saturday price reduced to 45p - cheaper than the 55p weekday edition.
    Last March, Trinity Mirror confirmed it was "evaluating certain of Northern and Shell's assets". But last month Northern and Shell chairman Richard Desmond denied "rumours" of an Express Newspapers sale to Trinity Mirror.
    It emerged last month that Trinity Mirror was considering creating a new, cut-price newspaper, but the company declined to comment.
    When Press Gazette asked Trinity Mirror yesterday if was true that Phillips and Rabbetts were working on a new cut-price national newspaper, a spokesperson said: "We are exploring alternative revenue streams across the publishing division as part of our ongoing strategy and we have seconded some resource as part of this."
    With Phillips seconded to this project, the Mirror's Sunday titles are currently being edited by Gary Jones.

    I’m too used to the vagaries of publishing or publishers!
    ‘Someone’ has done market research and found a gap in a non-existent, diminishing market – and now it’s an idea.
    It’s a bit like in the naughties when the Indo saw the ‘compact’ as the way forward (subsequently abandoning the broadsheet completely – but recently reverting to a broadsheet for the sport section). Likewise the fever in 2007 to launch a free paper in the capital as it had worked elsewhere.
    It’s very much clutching at straws.
    Publishers in the UK are looking model of the “i” – which worked well, but to the detriment of its sister papers – which ceased print publishing. You’d question if that’s a success story at all.
    It’s a very “publishing light” model. Apolitical, feature lead (from wire copy) and no editorial at all. And, no web version – Trinity Mirror’s digital first strategy is obviously out the window.

    Oh Its here, and its utter sh1t in my humble opinion.

    I didn't like it at all too 'Mag' style.

    Plus - I get the impression that It may be printed here - but... the papers design was tailored to a particular web width in the UK I assume and the press it's on here (I assume again) is much wider.

    Therefore they are fitting the smaller page into a web width wider than they envisioned. It's left with a large white space around the edges of the page - tragic really - very distracting. (tooooooo many years in pre-press to let that one go!)

    If they were thinking they would put it up against the 'i' they got it wrong. Its lightweight in the extreme.

    The infernal queues in the Spar around the corner from work. They have New Day, nobody has ever bought it in front of me. Thats as scientific as I can get until the ABC figures come out.

    I never thought this would annoy me until I had a lengthy train journey reading a UK printed Irish Times on a larger format and I was driven batty before Birmingham.

    And you can blame the 'rise of digital' and stuff like that - which is no doubt part of the equation - but to produce a paper of such puerile rubbish also has a hand in it!

    I just shows how deluded some news exes are. I mean, do the have a 'gut' or a 'brain' to look above the market research and spin?
