have a 15year old red deal table with lots of little dents from wear and tear.It seems to have a lacquer finish & i want to sand it down .
can lacquer be applied by brush and how many coats would it need for a long finish.
will this affect the mellow yellow colour

Woodoc have a nice product that's ideal for finish table tops called Woodoc 20. I've used other products from Woodoc and find them very good, easy to use and give a nice finish, much better than plain polyurethane varnish. I've seen Woodoc in the Carpentry Store in Naas, don't know where else might have it though.

Start with a Good Sanding working with the grain and using a heavy grit to remove the old lacquer and finish with fine grit.
I usually start with a coat of 1 part Varnish or whatever you use to 3 parts white spirits. Sand lightly again as the coating will lift the fibres of the wood. Then repeat again with 50/50. Then use your neat varnishes. Sand between every coat lightly and repeat until the desired result is achieved. Usually about 2 or 3 coats you should get the glass like feel to the surface.
Remember also every coat will darken it slightly so make sure you know what colour your trying to achieve when buy the product.

    Good luck with it.
