Hi all - just wondering if someone could help out a nervous driver! Travelling to Dublin from Cork on Good Friday and hoping to stay in the Red Cow but need to know if it's fairly simple driving up from Cork and into the hotel grounds?

I wouldn't be able for crazy roundabouts and 4 lanes, etc!

    Thanks in advance.

    You'll have to be. Sorry

Go straight through the n7/M50 interchange (stay in right hand lane as you approach) and then you'll have to go round the naas road/long mile road junction as if doing a huge U turn. ( I've marked it on this map for you from Rathcoole which is just outside Dublin (its all Motorway to there)

Close up of the last turn

YOu'll want to be in the left lane (mark long mile road) but don't turn left, you swing left slightly to turn right)

Oh no way :-( I thought maybe the entrance to hotel was before you hit the roundabout. Thanks for that info & it looks like such a nice hotel :-(

Does anyone have any advice on where might be good to stay before all the madness of lanes & free for all roundabouts?

We're going to the Aviva that night and it's a birthday present so was hoping to stay somewhere nice that wouldn't cost anymore than 300euro max for the 2 nights.

    Thanks.

The Louis Fitzgerald Hotel at Newlands Cross would be on the Cork side of the M50 so that would suit. Handy for the Luas too. The Green Isle would be further out again. City West has a Luas stop too so you could stay somewhere there

If you want stay in that area, the Ibis is the other side of the junction. It's pretty basic but solves the roundabout problem (Should be well under budget too).

The road to the red cow really isn't that bad though to be honest. It looks way more complicated than it actually is (for example once you make the turn for the "right" direction to the hotel, you have a couple of ways of getting back onto it)

Dont let the road dictate where you stay. Worst case scenario you drive a few minutes straight through the junction, go up to McDonalds, come back out & follow the road straight to the hotel.

The junction itself is confusing but its not impossible, especially with a competent co-driver

Thanks for that info - is it pretty much a case of taking an easy exit to get into any of these hotels? Anywhere on the red luas line that is as simple as possible to drive to from Cork would be great (and back on to motorway for heading home again).

I'm not able for roundabouts with more than 2 lanes unless I'm familiar with them - don't want to be a danger to others & myself!!!

This option doesn't sound too bad - thanks. Would this avoid roundabouts & lots of lanes?!

If the Naas Road / Long Mile looks daunting, just continue to the next junction and take a right at traffic lights with a filter light for right turns onto walkinstown avenue, then right at the next lights, again with a filter light for right turns onto the long mile road outbound. You then just filter left back onto the Naas Road outbound and the Red Cow will be on your left.

Reducing this to the most basic instructions...

-Approaching the M50, move into the right hand lane, signposted city centre

-Hold your position in this lane all the way through the M50 Junction and through the series of traffic lights at the long mile road junction (Woodies on your left at the long mile road junction)

-After this you've got a good stretch to get into the right hand lane for the next traffic lights where you're turning right with the aid of a filter light (FBD building on your left approaching this junction)

-Next traffic lights, another right turn with the aid of a filter light

-Follow straight through the first set of lights then move into the left lane as soon as the bus lane ends opposite the Esso station

-Follow around to the left here, yielding at any flashing amber lights and you're on the home straight

-Watch for the entrance of the Red Cow on the left hand side just before the footbridge at the top of the hill

There are no U turns allowed at the McDonald's, you'd need to go right and right again to get onto Long Mile outbound which is still very straightforward

The biggest problem with it is that the stop and lane markings are almost completely worn away and nobody has any idea what they're even spuosed to do on it.
I'd still stay in the Red Cow but take a wider swoop at it and avoid that junction.

I'm on it twice a day most days and nearly everyone is OK with it. Can understand first timers or nervous drivers having worries but it really is grand

An easier way is to hit the red cow roundabout but follow the traffic for southbound on m50 and go on the m50 to the next junction (ballymount- junction 10).

Take the first junction after getting on m50 .. So stay in the left lane and continue around the slip road to the left .. Staying in the left lane and this will bring you in to the ballymount area. At the first roundabout go left and straight through the next one and approx 400 meters in the right is the back entrance to the red cow hotel .. On good Friday it will take about 4 mins from the red cow roundabout to the back entrance with no traffic

Im going to stick a video up here tomorrow showing you how easy it is to get to the Red Cow Hotel coming from Cork.
Traffic will be light and it will be dark enough when the dashcam is recording as it will be early in the morning but it will give you an idea of how easy it actually is to get to it.
The street lights should be bright enough to show the road but if not I'll just do it later in the week I daylight

I'd be going for that Ballymount exit one. Nothing could be as hassle free as that, even if it is a few yards further.

I'll do both. At least the op will have an idea of how to tackle it then without having to worry

Ok, firstly apologies in advance for the bad driving :pac:

As i feared its probably too dark for you to get a real sense of your surroundings but ill post the two videos anyway so you have a rough idea of how easy it is.

If i get a chance to do them again in daylight, ill put them up for you here.

Option 1 - Straight in the Naas Road, loop back and out the Naas Road to the Red Cow

Option 2 - Naas Road onto M50, Off at Junction 10 keeping left, Left again, Straight through roundabout.

Due to works in the carpark, I had to turn right after the roundabout and gain access at the back of the hotel, normally you could continue straight on and the hotel is literally a few feet past where i turned right, on the right.

Thanks a mill for those finnsharpboy - I definitely wouldn't be able for the first option (those lanes with lines crossing across each other make me shudder!!).

The second option looks a lot more straight forward. What would I need to input into sat nav for this option?

Also, is it easy to get back on to the motorway from the hotel for the return journey back to Cork?

    Thanks again!

yes, just take the same exit you entered the hotel at and turn right (your only option) straight onto the motorway (just stick to middle lanes to avoid inadvertently turning onto M50. After that, it's a straight road to Cork...

If you want to get back onto the Naas Road to Cork, its just out the main entrance and your on the road home to Cork

On google maps the only way i can seem to find using option 2 is to input Cork to Ballymount, that takes you onto the M50 and off at Junction 10 which is the one you need to take.

I will try to get a video for you in daylight that you can watch a few times so you will have a good idea of the lanes to be in as you approach the M50. Once you get onto the M50 its simple.

Probably be Saturday before i get a chance to get a daylight video for you
