Corolla won't start

hi... OH's 98 corolla was jumping a bit while driving... it happened before in last corolla and was ignition leads needed replacing. So tried new set of leads last night and car would not start. Replaced old leads and car still would not start.

So today in daylight I took out the spark plugs to find that oil had leaked into the chambers. I cleaned out the chambers as best I could, put in previous set of cleaner plugs which were still ok, still car will not start. I tried jump starting off my car and it made a better effort to start but still would not spark up. It turns over but fails at the spark stage.

This is where I am stuck... any help appreciated, thanks.

Correct me if i am wrong, but a 2000 corolla doesn't have ignition leads, it has individual coils. unless your car is a very late pre face lift car.

if it is the case that your's is a late pre face lift with leads, my guess is you have gotten the firing order mixed up while swapping the leads over.

does your engine look like this?

so it looks like I got the firing order wrong.. I am after trying several different combinations but still not starting. Where would I find out the correct firing order for the engine? Would it be labelled somewhere inside?

does your cars coil look like the one in the photo above? if so, follow that pattern.

next easiest thing to do would be to post a clear picture of your leads and distributor and we can write on it where each one should be.

i have this image on my laptop, i can't remember if this is from when i solved the problem with the firing order or from before i pieced it together (looks like the order is right but the actual leads are wrong (wrong length used on wrong cyliner), either way, it's a good starting point for you if you havn't tried anything yet and a good example of how to take the photo if that's what you need to do.

many thanks Toyotafan... I will post a photo... the right hand side of the model in question is a straight line, not circular.
