High pitch squeak when starting

Wondering could any experts have any insight as to what could be wrong? Thanks a mil.
    Make / Model:
    2000 Nissan Almera

    Problem:
When starting (and from first to third gear) there's a squeaking noise that almost sounds like plastic on plastic that's rotating or rubbing against itself... if that makes sense!?
I've also noticed that it limits acceleration a little bit. As when the squeak occurs the accelerator is a little sluggish.

I'm sorry that it may be a little vague...

It sounds like it may be something in your auxiliary drive train, I..e the belts that drive the alternator/power steering pump, does it rise in pitch when you press the accelerator? Alternatively, these engines are known for stretched timing chains, which would account from the power loss (sometimes accompanied with an engine warning light) and the noise could be the plastic guide rails rubbing/slapping against the slack chain. Either way best to get it checked.

From an amateurs point of view..
What electrical stuff so you have turned on when it happens - headlights, fan, rear window demister? Heated mirrors?
Does the same noise occur if you have all electrical items turned on?

With my lack of knowledge I don't mean to immediately disregard your post, but I have a feeling it's mechanical rather than electrical.

But, now that you mention it. I've the radio and heater on when starting. I'll troubleshoot by starting the car with these off.

    Thanks for replying.

I'm basically suggesting the same thing as the first part of Watersons post - the belt that drives the electrics and power steering can get a bit over loaded on cold mornings with a lot of loads on the system and starts slipping and squealing.

My amateur interpretation of this is that if it is slipping/gripping/slipping then you may also have some funny engine performance.

Trying it with no electrical or power steering loads would help you figure out if it is the aux belt (hopefully) rather than timing chain.

Rub bit soap on the belt see if the noise stops, if it does belt has prob streched a bit and just needs replacing

Looks like the belt all right. The rhythmic squeaking went when starting up and first to third is now grand.

May need the belts looked at / replaced.

    Thanks for all replies!
