Some advice on a new car

    Some background:
We moved from the city centre where our 3 door Ford Focus served us well to the suburbs and now find ourselves more and more needing a second car. I use the car the most for travelling to work in Dublin 18 approx 35km from our house. I travel main roads (N4/M50). I am pregnant and due in a few months so need a family friendly car.

We are looking for something in the 15K price point with low mileage. We have looked at a ford Mondeo, VW Passatt and are also now considering a Toyota Avensis. I know nothing much about cars but we are looking for something economical fuel and tax wise with space for a family that is reliable.

Is the cars we are looking at the right ones? Should we consider something else? Any advice would be very much appreciated.

These are some of the cars we were going to go look at this weekend:

    2012 Avensis
    2011 Avensis
    Alt 2012 Avensis
    Ford Mondeo
    Alt Ford Mondeo

If you're happy with Ford, look for a C-Max. Your back will be grateful.

I'd recommend something with leather. Will be far easier to clean when kids mash all sorts of food into the seats.

I'd look at something like a crossover. Boot will not be as big as a saloon but will still take a buggy and the higher ground clearance will make getting a baby in and out of a baby seat alot more easier. The Qashqai is worth a look, they are very popular with small young families.

+1 on the Qashqai btw - my wife has one and it's great for a buggy, stuff, more stuff etc - we've the petrol but I'd imagine you'll want a diesel. They do seem to hold residuals well so you're going to be paying a fair bit for any of them above 2010.

Thanks Guys. I do like the Ford and would get another, maybe we should check out the C-Max. I will also check out the Qashqai as it is not something I have considered or know much about. As much as I would love to buy an Audi I want to focus on getting something newer, 2011 or there abouts. Ideally a diesel would be the best option I think as my current car eats petrol so will become the back up car for shorter journeys.

C-Max are a lovely car. It might not have leather do. You should take a look at the Kia Sportage and Hyundai IX35 too. Lots off both out there so you might get a great deal on one.

Not only big mileage, which OP clearly does not want, it is also subject to VRT - which will get it out of the OP's price range...

Thanks to those that offered advice, we went with a Nissan Qashqai in the end. We got one with just shy of 40,000 KM so hopefully will be a reliable car into the future :D
