From reading various threads here I'm curious what setup everyone has. I have Vodafone vdsl with the huawei HG-658c bridged to a tp-link wdr3600. Currently getting 30 down and 8 up, hopefully that will increase a bit if vectoring is enabled.

Huawei HG-658c bridged to a TP-Link Archer C7 in hall, homeplug to an older Belkin router in the sitting room for wired connection to Smart TV, Sky etc.

    Nothing fancy,
Standard Sky fibre router (80MB down/20mb up) connected wired via ethernet to work pc elsewhere in the house, everything else is wireless and generally within 30feet of the modem through plaster walls so no signal issues,

Only somewhat fancy thing I have is a 16TB NAS connected to the router via ethernet, covers most of my backup and storage needs

Where do I start... 2 vm 360/36mb cable modems (compal or whatever they are called) bridged into a ubiquiti networks edge router Poe, with a Cisco meraki 8/10 port Poe switch and a mikrotik 24port gige switch with 2 10gb uplinks (not currently setup). Wifi is provided with two ubiquiti networks unifi aps, and all works quite well... Have hit 600mb/s down and 72mb/s up on wired. That's the major network parts. There are servers, vms, and more, but guessing it's a broadband question... :-)

Almost hit buy on a Mikrotik many times, but still keeping it residential grade.

    EPC3925 (120_12 ) bridged to:
    -WNDR3800
    -Samknows WB

Internally have two older APs, several gig switches and a menagerie of clients.

The mikrotik gear is defiantly nice. And they are quite cheap too. If you have a spare box with some gige cards, you can build it yourself too...

Oh PFSense has been on my "That'd be nice to play with" list for a long time. + Asterix on top.

Vodafone 15mb ADSL + Asus DSL-N55U + two gigabit switches. Going crazy waiting for Siro - the slow download speeds I can live with, the ping going to **** whenever someone watches a video on YouTube I can't.

I have 70/20 eFibre connection until vectoring gets enabled in the exchange. Have an F2000 bridged to a Mikrotik RB951 as gateway router with an F2000 as 5ghz AP behind the TV then have 12u cabinet in spare room with 24 port gigabit switch and a dual band TP Link TL-WDR3600 with DDWRT in AP mode.

I also have a Raspberry Pi running pi-hole. Definitely do this folks, it's a great project for little money and completely cuts out all ads on all devices.

This dsl buffering only happens when you max the connection. You need some shaping, don't let any single device max the connection and all will go smoothly. A decent router with QOS will sort this

Sky SR102 VDSL router 24/6 Mb but I have a TP-Link WDR3600 running dd-wrt connected to the Sky router using homeplugs since the WiFi from the Sky router isn't great upstairs.

Technicolor TC7200 in bridge mode with an AVM FRITZ!Box 7390. As well as a HP MicroServer Gen8. Getting 120/12 currently.

Tempted to go to 360Mb to get the new Compal modem.

Would anyone here be open to renting out a Ubiquiti Edge router for a week? It's not urgent, just to build a test network near our WiFi mesh along O'Connell St & Dame St for the media bus on St Patrick's Day. It would be returned in pristine condition, and can also throw in a few VIP passes to watch the parade from beside the GPO.

To stay on topic, my build for home is straightforward; just a Vodafone modem with 80d,20u which does DHCP on the home LAN and then a simple Cisco 1200 holding the dev LAN. A variety of Ubiquiti nanos, aps, other vendor APs on both LANs as needed. Both LANs join at a Synology NAS which presents a shared drive space to both LAN (iSCSI for the dev hyperV host), and backs up it's 3TB of photo content to Glacier nightly.

Current risk I'm trying to address relates to a crypto overwriting my NAS files (versioning with Glacier is not out of the box yet). Soon, Synology will release a new disk level system which will version locally and become read-only when the drive runs out of space; thus crypto cannot complete.

Well my setup has changed a bit since the last time.

Virgin Media are gone, as is the AVM FRITZ!Box 7390, replaced with the 7490 and Eir F2000.

The AVM kit has a VDSL modem integrated but it doesn't perform as well as the F2000 so I've resorted to bridging the F2000 instead. I'd assume that the Lantiq chipset in the 7490 isn't as good as the Broadcom one in the F2000.

Those f2000s are really decent for a provider supplied residential router. I've used a few of them as 5ghz APs because the have 802.11ac but they also have a decent CPU and enough RAM. You don't hear many complaints about them, they perform as well as expensive gear. A better firewall and routing OS is really the only reason to bridge with these

Netgear D7000 on eir fibre. (50mb sync)

    3 x sets of Powerline adapters. (2 sets are 350mbs, the 3rd is a
    TP-LINK TL-PA8010PKIT 1200mbs)

Also running 2 PS4's and evision on the same setup. Along with 10+ on wifi.
Access all locked down to new devices.

    500 Down / 25 Up bridged into Netgear AC1750

Seperate 250 Down / 25 Up being used for wired devices like Apple TV

    100Mb Vodafone,getting 94Mb/18Mb for €45 a month and Sky's middle package for €40 a month.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,664 ✭✭✭rogue-entity

Very simple setup. 120/12 from VM at €40/mo > pfSense running on a fanless PC with dual NICs > Gigabit switch.
A seperate ancient WNR834B as an AP, but it can't push more than about 18Mbit so even the laptop is wired.

Future plans involve a Raspberry Pi as an Asterisk PBX once I find an inexpensive way to add the existing landline as a trunk too.

Sorry to be nosy and off topic, but was wondering what did you end up doing for your installation - in a previous posting I think your main kit was upstairs and the EIR modem would end up being installed in your hallway?
Did you go wireless or did you get the master point moved or did you run a cable from the hall to your upstairs?
Am currently considering jumping ship from VM and EIr is probably my best option - only about 100m from cabinet.

    No not really.

There was some confusion over my address; the account was registered as the flat downstairs instead of mine because Eir didn't have my address on their records. But the install went fine. The NTU was left where it was (in my own flat but over the other side of the room). I already had a cable running past it to feed my desktop PC from the VM modem so I just split that cable to feed the modem in its new location.
