E12 Corolla tapping when cold

    So, E12 corolla with 4zz-fe. Noticed it was tapping today from cold start. Once it warmed up the tapping went away.

    Checked the oil and it was down near minimum (I had not been checking as regularly as I should because it just wasn't burning any in between services...I know, I know)

    Anyway, topped it up and the tapping is fainter, but still there on cold start.

    Now, after doing the usual google diagnosis, I have come up with everything from heavier weight oil (I am running 10w40) being more viscous causing the tapping, to the big end being on the way out, with everything in between.

    Anybody any next step suggestions? (Or even just reasurrances that I don't have to replace the engine :D)
