According to a garda inquiry published in today's Sunday Times the current (metropolitan) mayor of Limerick, Jerry O'Dea, can't be prosecuted for drunk driving as it's outside the statute of limitations.

The garda reports show O'Dea, a Fianna Fail councillor, was three times over the legal limit when he crashed while driving through the city, flipping his BMW.

    Sunday Times

O'Dea is still refusing to resign. The brass neck on this cretin is something to behold.

Yeah, well, this is what happens when people freely vote for crooks and thieves. People of Limerick, stand up and take a bow! You get what you deserve, since after all, this criminal's party's treatment of your city isn't exactly a secret. Shannon airport, Dell computers, etc etc etc.

Sorry I am a bit confused here. Is this not a simple case, he crashed his car and blood was taken at the time proven he had been drinking.

Mayor, TD or not you could be the President of the USA, but to drink drive and not only that to flip a car, how does he still hold a driving license?

    Thankfully he didn't kill anyone.

Unfortunately Mayors are not elected in Ireland..it's usually the main parties in the council's that agree amoung themselves as to who will be mayor..I've always noticed how shabby most Limerick Mayors look.

Indeed, it's scary to think that someone in his position is free not only to drive, but also, as a publican, to sell alcohol to others.

One has to speculate as to his judgment. Would he refuse to serve drink to others if he suspected they were driving? After all, he got behind the wheel pissed.

There is an ongoing Garda investigation as to why he wasn't prosecuted. Probably best not to speculate until that is finished, but it is on the public record that Limerick's first citizen (and arsehole in chief) made inquiries as to whether he would be prosecuted..

As IsaacWunder has pointed out there is an ongoing investigation going on at the moment into this case, as per Irish law you can't discuss an ongoing case so this thread has to be closed.
