When I first made mine I measured as many others as I could, height of sides, length of drawbar, internal sizes, where axels were fixed etc, and I just went with what looked right to me.
The height of the ladder rack also depends on do you plan on towing it with a salon car or a berlingo type. Seen a golf scrape it's roof backin up a steep slope with a low ladder bar and long ladder once.

    I plink therefore I am

I had a 6'x4'2" made for me that was perfect for 8'x4's I used to put 3 timbers across the sides and put the boards on top. Needed the extra couple of inches because I also had a ladder rack and needed to be sure the 4 foot wide sheets would fit under it between the uprights.

I am planning on making the trailer a sort of flat bed or very low sides but its going to be 1250 mm or more ,I am not sure about the ladder rack I was sort of hoping to pick up a second hand canoe so am not sure how I could fit that on. its the road legal end of things I am stuck on I have found some info where the tail lights should go I am not fitting brakes so no problems there just use my judgment I think and not bother about getting it passed as a one of build whats the worst that can happen

just use my judgment I think and not bother about getting it passed as a one of build whats the worst that can happen

Worst that could happen , would probably be ,

it come adrift while driving and kill somebody,

and your insurance would be invalid and

You lose your house through a subsequent lawsuit ,

But sure look at the potential saving over buying a certified trailer.

...so you don't mind being open to prosecution then ?

I work in a company that makes truck stuff that has to be Type Approved, and even if I wanted to I can't go out on the floor and just 'make' a trailer.

I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Irrelevant document, the OP isn't selling trailers.
