How much oil to use in VW Caddy engine

Hi does anyone know how much oil a 2011 VW Caddy 1.6tdi engine takes.

I got an oil and filter changed today and I supplied 5 Litres of oil and filter as l wanted to make sure the correct oil was used.

The guy in motor factors said around 4.5 litres would be enough but when l went to collect it from the garage the mechanic said he had to add an extra half litre of oil.

I don't mind if he tried to scam an extra €10 for oil Im more concerned he didn't use my oil and used a cheaper version so by saying he added extra l couldnt ask for the container with any left over oil for topping it up .

5.5 litres seems alot to me ?

I should add l have checked the level of oil and its fine not over filled.

If you still have the original handbook that came with the car it may give you fluid capacities.

Around 4.2 brings me up to the low mark on mine, 1.6 CAYE

Thanks I will check the handbook never thought of that but just googling there Im getting 4.3L so that coincides with the 4.2L.

I didnt get the booked stamped for an oil change l could go back to get it done and if only l could think of an excuse to get the empty oil container l would ask just for peace of mind .

depending on the exact engine, 4.3 to 4.5L

however (and sorry in advance for asking) but did you buy 5l or 4l? I know a few folks who have been caught before buying what they thought was a 5l oil thing and got a 4l instead

Thanks just checked was defo a 5L container .

I'll keep an eye on it or just go to a different garage and get it changed again,l wouldn't mind l suspect a different garage didn't use the correct long life oil in a previous service that's why l supplied and changed mechanics.

I change the oil+filter regularly on a 2010 Golf (same engines?) 1.6 TDI and even though the handbook says 4.4 Litres it takes just under 5 Litres to bring it right to the mark but it certainly wouldnt need more than 5 Litres.

OP are you 100% sure that you bought 5l of oil?

The old gallon is 4.4l so with metrication you can get both 4l and 5l cans. Castrol for example use 4l cans http://www.micksgarage.com/search/Engine%20Oils%20and%20Lubricants?fffEngine%20Oils%20and%20Lubricants=Engine%20Oil&fffPack%20Size=4%20Litre

I used Castrol Oil exclusively for over 40 years, when they gave up their 5 Ltr cans, I gave them up, and that's a few years ago now.

I suppose if you are only changing the oil you might as well do it yourself? At least you will be certain that the correct oil is used.

I really only do it because I,m steeped in all sorts of mechanical "objects" all my life, I would certainly think that the vast majority of independent garages/mechanics are trustworthy...they wouldn't stay in business long, I personally know 4 or 5 who are first class in all aspects of their work and they have some of the same customers+ their sons and daughters for a lifetime.

After somebody earlier suggested that l might of bought 4L I rang motor factors ,I couldn't remember the brand but they said they only stocked 5L cans except Castrol which was 4L and it defo wasn't Castrol.

I also questioned the mechanic when he said he added half a litre as l was surprised and asked "it took 5 and a half litres " and he said yea.

Thinking about it its crazy to think a garage would use a different oil instead of the supplied oil but something isnt adding up as it seems he didn't put 5.5 Litres into it .

This is a new garage aswell only open about a year you'd imagine they'd be glad of a new customer coming in.

Question I have at this stage is does any common 1.6l engine petrol or diesel take more than 5l of oil?

Have you actually checked the oil level on the dipstick with the vehicle on level ground?, an extra 0.5 Ltr will probably not do your engine any harm but you will certainly see the level as "high"......unlikely perhaps but maybe the mechanic did put 5.5 Ltrs into the engine.
