Temporary crowns

I had four temporary crowns put on my front teeth yesterday and I'm so worried. They look really awful (look like dentures with tartar build-up in between teeth) and feel too thick. I'm really starting to worry now that the permanent crowns will be just as bad :-/

The dentist told me not to pay any attention to them as they are only temp's but I can't help but worry! Please tell me the permanent crowns don't look anything like the temporary ones!

The permanent crowns shouldn't look as bad as the temporaries!!

How bad the temporaries look now is a different question and indeed they may look terrible or you may have a ridiculously high aesthetic demand of these temps...

Fine aesethetics aside, they should generally be the size and shape of what will ultimately be there.....

I felt exactly the same way but I can assure you they're not, The crown will look exactly like your original teeth, The temporaries are just a kind of a generic template, You have nothing to worry about :o

Thank you for replying! I have a pretty small mouth, so I'm hoping that's why the temp's are so big (that is assuming they are just generic).

My dentist is really good and he's done really good work on my teeth before. I guess I just really got a fright when I saw the temp's as I didn't expect them to look so bad! It makes it look like my teeth are too big for my mouth.

OP you should ask your dentist these questions. The temporaries are generally a "low definition" version of the final result, or sometimes they are templates off your original teeth and should be like a low definition version of your original teeth.

Peoples notions of aesthetic acceptability differs greatly. You need to let the dentist know your expectations are.

Thank you for your reply fitzgeme - when you say 'low definition' are you referring to the material they are made with? Should I tell the dentist my concerns now, or do I wait until my next appointment when the crowns have been made, before he puts them in?

Yes, they are one shade of acrylic whereas the final crowns are layered ceramic

talk to your dentist before the crowns are made and tell him what you dont like about the temps

If it is the colour etc, then the finals will be better

if it is the shape and positioning then you need to ensure that the finals are not made to suit the temps....
