Could the wrong gear oil spec cause stiff gears?

As above since I got my clutch and flywheel changed a couple of months back straight away when I got into it the gearbox felt different. It was no longer smooth and felt rough when changing gears. Most noticable when changing from 1st to 2nd.

The best way to describe it was sort of like I can feel the teeth of the gears grinding of each other.

I bit my tounge about it the first 1000 miles thinking it would go away but nothing.

Im led to believe that Ford boxs are quite specific when it comes to gear oil so maybe the garage used the wrong type ?

Or the synchros are going ? However as said this only occured when I got the clutch & flywheel done so I finding that hard to believe.

My last guess would be whether or not the gear linkage was put back on it correctly ?

The wrong spec oil can cause the syncros to not work properly.

E.g. using GL-5 spec gear oil in a GL-4 specced gearbox. I have first hand experience in this. I put GL-5 in and the downshifts were very hard and you almost feel grinding. I got some GL-4 spec and it fixed it instantly :p

I would say it's more a case of the clutch plate not being properly aligned when fitted. You should have brought it straight back immediately as whoever fitted it could quite easily turn around and say it was something you done that caused it. Was it a main dealer that fitted it?

The incorrect gear oil can make the gear shifts stiff but there should be no grinding.

Incorrect. If the syncros aren't working like they should that is exactly what you'll get - grinding as you force it into gear.

On cars with no syncro for reverse you hear this often if you're driving slowly forward and try to put it into reverse - a big grind.

If the gearbox went on at all, then the clutch plate is properly aligned.

what about the obvious clutch hydraulics not bled enough causing grating ,does car start to move when pedal is slightly off the floor?

Wrong spec oil can also make gearchange very stiff, especially when cold.

Say what now? 1st and 2nd gear change is where the problem shows. That's nothing to do with a misaligned clutch plate.

If they've used the wrong gear oil it could be affecting the syncro, particularly if it's already worn, allowing it to slip too much. If you've had to have a flywheel and clutch replaced then it's quite possible this is what's happening as a result of wear in the syncro pack.

If you double clutch it (Clutch, shift to neutral, clutch again and into gear) does it still grind? If not, suspect the syncro. If you think the wrong oil was used replace it with the correct (latest) spec oil before going to the expense of having the box stripped and repaired.

The wrong oil can be a right nuisance in cold weather.

Had the job done in a reliable indy.

Another thought I had as well if the clutch was bled properly but I don't think that could be the issue.

The reason I had to have the clutch done was due to clutch drag, so I was thinking that the two issue are somehow connected and that it's come back to bite me in the arse.

I have Ford grade spec gear oil there that I purchased, not cheap by the way.

The car is twelve years old so i'd really have to sum up if it would be worth getting the box reconditioned on it or not.

Why no bring car back and ask your reliable indy to check it.

Changed out the gearbox oil to Ford spec oil and still the same. Looking a lot like the synchro now :(

Mr Jingles hasn't posted in months.

Start a thread with your specifics, car brand age, what happened etc.
