Bit confused about SNR/Attenuation readings

I know SNR higher is better, and line attenuation lower is.

But looking at these speed calculators online, aren't the the readings dependent on the current speed you're connected at? (adsl2+)

If I'm connected at 12Mb on adsl2+ for example won't my readings be much better than when at 24Mb and thus the calculator will give much higher attainable rates?

I swapped the zyxel router out for the old netopia and my line attention went to 10/4 compared to 15/5 - the snr also increased from 6/14 to 7/17.

I guess I'm just worried my line has an issue, efibre is launching here soon. We're currently on the 20Mb adsl2+ package. Is it normal to have good attenuation and poor enough snr or is it that purely down to the sync speed?

My SNR was low when I was on ADSL2+ which wasn't good but the connection was stable at 14Mb/s I have gotten fibre in September things have improved and the connection is much better.

Attenuation should be fixed for a given frequency(technology).

The DSLAM side attenuation will be more reliable than what the modem guesses, but it can fluctuate a bit due to simply a loose joint in the cable or a few coils in the "patch" cable between MDP and modem.

SNR is for a given speed, so your line at 12Mb might read 7dB, 10Mb might read 10dB, 7Mb might read 15dB and so on. Its also a "live" reading and can fluctuate between peak and off peak times.

Are you 700m from the exchange? If so your rates should be way better.

Yeah the exchange is around 400 metres away as the bird flies. I found out today I won't be direct connected when efibre comes, there's a cabinet around 100 meters up the road that's planned and I`ll be connected to that so I'm optimistic I`ll be able to get great speeds.

You should be syncing at 20Mb or more really now. I'd do standard DSL troubleshooting now to try and get your dSNR up then call eir and get a boost.

    Modem at master socket
    No unfiltered phones
    No unfiltered monitored alarms
    No unfiltered sky TVs
No 5 way bloody phone splitters
No long phone cables between modem and master socket

All that already being done, if rates still arent better you'll wanna remove *everything* bar the modem and test.

Tried all those things but the SNR didn't improve. I originally had the full 24Mb profile for years and it was stable. I switched to vodafone back in January and I couldn't get it anymore due to the prequal or whatever. Then I switched back to Eircom a few months ago and they wouldn't switch it back on either. I'm kinda desperate for it since it's the only profile they put fastpath on.

You reckon there's some kind of fault on the line?

Probably is. Switching provider shouldnt change anything unless its an LLU exchange, then something between eir and BT could have been botched.

If youve been through it with broadband support call eirs phone faults guys and say the line is noisy, that'll get a real tech to check whats going on.

I'm over a KM from the exchange so it's not a major increase but it get 25Mb/s down and 7Mb/s up with a ping of 9ms usually to servers in Ireland my pings used to be 30+ .
