    Hi all,

Any of your insurers allow this?
I am doing renovations work on the house this year and will need to rent a van two or three times before end of summer.
Van rentals noted I should transfer personal policy when taking rental.

Any of your insurers accommodate this?

    Thanks
    irish

Why do you need to transfer? The rental will have its own insurance.

Yeah, I got that from them, thanks. They charge for their own insurance which is with some provider they have and because I will be taking it to UK, they charge €150 so she suggested I just move my own insurance. My policy is up this month so I might as well start off on the right foot.

    Because it works out cheaper.

    O.P.
the only way to find out is to phone the insurance company that you are with and ask them.
If you don't have insurance at the moment but you are getting cover, AXA and Zurich did it for me without a problem. But I was using my own commercial van insurance to cover the rental van, I have no idea how it works if you only have private car insurance. You will have to ask them.
But make sure to tell them you are taking it to the U.K., might be a sticky point with some.

If its a private policy you currently have then its highly unlikely your insurer will allow you to transfer your insurance onto a van.

Almost no insurers allow temporary transfers anymore either, or impose strict conditions about your car being in for repair

If your own insurer does allow you to put the van on cover temporarily then carefully the cover you would get from the rental (ok it's €150) to see where it differs

Both your own policy and the rental company will cover damage and theft of the van etc but does the rental company also cover lost revenue, would you be liable for that?

If the van is damaged or stolen the rental company will look to you for lost rental revenue either for period of repair or it a total loss or stolen then for period of replacement.

Sure you aren't going to crash it but insurance is meant to be there just in case and you may not be providing yourself with like for like cover. If you are happy to have the additional risk that is fine so long as you know in advance.

A rental company will not be shy in seeking lost revenue if they have an opportunity!

I can't imagine any insurer would permit a Commercial vehicle onto a Motor Policy.

Are you sure the €150 is an insurance charge and not an additional charge to be allowed to take the van out of the country?

If it is possible to transfer your private insurance to the van , one thing to take note of is some insurance companys charge an office/administration fee for things like this, some being 40 euro. and 40 euro back.

Zurich did it for me at the end of November while my van was off the road, albeit i did have commercial cover to begin with.

2 months ago "123" were going to allow me to transfer my car insurance to a rental van, but only up to a limit of 3 days. I needed 4.

Also, since I was leaving my car in the van rental compound, it would've been completely uninsured against fire and theft if anything happened to it.
    So I decided against that.

Yeah look, i'll get on to insurance company next week.
I'll keep 123 in mind though, at least I know they have option on it. Paying a bit extra isn't really a problem but obviously not a huge amount.
    Thanks for help

Axa did it for me a few years back for a single days rental of a large van.

Hey ASOT, any follow on on this post?
Would be v helpful to find underwriters or co who allow it.

    Thanks.

Well AA don't allow it, they don't underwrite their own policies which is the stumbling block, they are an intermediary, just confirmed with them :-(
