Hello, I am looking to buy a second hand car, the one I like is a 2010 one with 96000 on it, is that a lot for a 6 year old car?

    Cheers

In general, no. What's the car?

Average enough. Does it have a service history or is it possible that it still has the original engine oil in it?

69000 miles is low for a now 6 year old car. That is on average just over 10000 miles per year which is below the general yearly average.

Don't take a stamped service book as gospel as blank ones can be bought on ebay and stamped afterwards. Ring a few of the garages that stamped it and verify what was done and at what mileage.

Title says 69k miles. OP says 96k. Which is it?

    No, that's lower than average.

    Is it a UK car?

I'd be damn sceptical of a 6 year old diesel with 69k miles on it. Not saying it's bogus but I'd definitely tread carefully and look for ways to warrant the mileage and service history.

As far as I know it's an Irish car and petrol not diesel I don't know if that'll make any difference

My mistake, assumed it was a diesel one.

Regardless history checks with something like motorcheck or cartell is probably advised.

Why skeptical of a diesel with that mileage.. Cant see why it been a diesel would be any different than a petrol

Mine is the same year with less than that. It's not that unusual these days.

The "recommended" yearly mileage for diesel is around 20 k. Diesels in general are built to rack up more miles than the petrol equivalents.

Is yours running OK? Seems low mileage for a diesel.

    Why wouldn't it be?

Yea OK diesel engines are built to rack up more miles but if the car is not doing the so called recommended mileage what real difference will it make..
Short journeys or lots of Idle time will play havoc with DPF if fitted and guess carbon can create issues ..
But if used for longer jorneys when everything gets a chance to get hot and burn off the excess crap surely low mileage wont play such a factor then..

And would it not be the same for higher mileage also ,, if used on all short journeys where things dont get to temp it might have issues also..

In general it's accepted that a diesel engine is better at doing long journeys i.e higher mileage. They only become more efficient really once warmed up properly and aren't much use around town. To be fair it could well be genuine, but cars rack up serious miles over in the UK, I'd be checking it properly

In some cases it might be, but short journeys aren't good for the clutch/DMF/DPF combo that a newer diesel brings.

I don't see the sense in buying a diesel car for 10k miles per year.

It's a Touran. It has probably spent most of its life ferrying the kids to school and doing the weekly shop.

Not like it's a Rep Mobile.....

While that would make sense, plenty of these cars are used as means of ferrying people about as taxi's or for business personnel etc. Getting a bit OT here though :D
