Hold it to your head and see if it works.

Is it a problem when the car is parked in a specific area where some interference could be impacting on the signal?

Have a 08 focus and the car key is now really slow to lock and unlock the doors.

I thought it was the battery so a few weeks ago I replaced it but the past day or two it seems really bad.

Really seem to have to get close and hold the button hard / press it loads for it to work.

Any idea what the problem could be?

Might be dirty. You could wipe it with vinegar

It could be the button contacts on the fob itself. See if you can take the cover off and clean around where the buttons make contact with the circuit board.

When you press the buttons is there a light on the fob to indicate that it's recognizing the buttons being pressed?

This happened to me and I changed the battery on the fob. It is now much better.

Did it work better after swapping the battery, and then got worse again?
What type of battery did you buy? Brand?

Try another battery from a premium brand. They're not very expensive.

If it gets better, then it's the fob. If it does not get better, ecu or actuators maybe.

Depends, it could just need some oil squirts into all locks.
We'll get to next steps if the battery swap fails.

Having the same problems myself at the moment! Have ordered a new fob because the battery is not replaceable.

What's the best oil for car locks? I've always been told to use silicone spray but it doesn't seem to be working well.

Same thing happens with my da's 07 mondeo, check when you open the fob that none of the parts are loose, the board on his had come loose from the mount and there was a dodgy connection.
