My father has been quite ill for some time, and I'm told it's best to get Power of Attorney now in case anything happens, as if we don't it can get very problematic.

Can anyone tell me how I go about doing this, what's involved and what it costs?

    Thanks

Read above. My ex's mother got it when she was very sick. Solicitor charged €150. Don't know if thats dear or cheap.

Thanks, so do I just contact any solicitor, or maybe a few and see how much they charge?

Yeah, any of them can do it. It seems a fairly straight forward thing.

I went through this just before Christmas with both of my parents.
The solicitor will draft up the papers, and send a copy to your father's GP.
The GP certified that my parents understood the process we were putting in place.
It's a good idea to prepare it now as it can take some time to put into effect.

You'll need to have yourself named as the attorney, and ideally have the name of a person who will act as attorney if you are unable to.
You'll also be asked for names and addresses of two people who will be notified if the power of attorney is ever activated.
Their role is really just to be aware it has happened, and keep an eye out that the power is not abused.
Once the final copy is drafted they will also receive a copy of the document by post.

Good luck with it and the circumstances surrounding it.
