Laptop Screen Issue

Hi lads, I have an old Toshiba laptop (can't remember exact age but it's running Vista so elderly enough) which I sometimes use as a spare machine or to play music through. For the past few months when I turn it on there's a red mist covering the screen & the trackpad is quite sluggish.

I've read about this problem online & the screen issue is said to be something to do with the video card & just needs a wire to be reconnected or something. However, if I do nothing to my own laptop & just leave it alone for a while (usually about 30 mins) the mist disappears & the trackpad works perfectly without any other intervention.

Could this be a battery issue perhaps & if so would changing the battery on it help? Thinking of putting a new OS on it so would be nice to get this issue sorted. Thanks in advance!
