Reimporting car back to Ireland?

    Has anyone got any experience with that?

    Assume car is an original Irish car, which was sold brand new by a dealer in Ireland ( so VRT paid), used in Ireland for many years, and then exported abroad (within EU) and registered there - no VRT refund ever acquired.

    If this car is back in Ireland (of foreign plates), what is the story?

    Does it need VRT inspection as every other imported car to Ireland?
    If it does, will it cost anything?
    Will NCT run from date of reimportation, or withing old NCT due dates?

    What consequences could someone suffer if caught driving foreign car like that if he fails to officially reimport it, considering they can't prosecute for avoiding paying VRT tax as there is none to be paid?

    Any info appreciated?

    You'll have a lot of explaining when stopped by customs as the law is you can't drive a non Irish registered car. No idea on the VRT inspection.

    I'd assume NCT stays with the 1st date of registration, assuming it was exported before the ability to NCT earlier came in, like every other vehicle imported into the country.

    Just on the last point, the law precludes an Irish resident from driving an unregistered vehicle (which term includes a foreign registered vehicle with certain exceptions familiar to you). While you are right that no VRT is being evaded, that is not strictly a defence, iecthe car would remain exposed to seizure and the driver exposed to prosecution. I imagine, in the circumstances, either thecGardai or Customs would give you a bollicking rather than prosecute but that's only conjecture.

    My understanding in the absence of any taxation issues would be you could just put back on the old plates? Did you declare it permanently exported or just Take it to another country?

    I'm almost certain If you just took it to another country and registered it there without notifying dept of transport that it was permanently exported, just put the original Irish Reg no back on and apply for duplicate Vrc.

    If you did Notify dept of transport that it was permanently exported without claiming a vrt rebate, you can re-register it with Shannon and simply put Irish Reg plate back on.

    I'd recommend you contact dept of transport and get a definitive answer straight from the horses mouth.

    Id imagine they'd have to reregister it, just putting old plates on it would not be legal as its correct reg number is the foreign one.

    While personally probably most people wouldn't notify dept of transport that it was exported, I'd imagine foreign vehicle registration authority, upon registering vehicle there, would send info to Irish dept of transport about that.

    We brought an Avensis back from the North last year. No one remembers notifying Shannon that it had been exported, but it had been removed from the National Vehicle Database, so we needed to officially notify them it was back before we put the old plates back on (which the driver had helpfully kept, and left in the boot :-) )

    So if no one notified Shannon upon exporting a vehicle, then only option is it was dvla who informed them.

    How did you officially notify them car was back in Ireland? Was it just a written statement to Shannon or revenue, or did you have to present a car for VRT inspection.
    How did NCT dates run after reimportation?

    I'm not sure how we notified them as it's not my side of the business, but I think it was a letter to the DoE.

    Didn't need to go for a VRT inspection.

    Presume that the NCT dates stayed with date of first registration - it came back to us in ROI to be sold, so we weren't really worried about that.

    I've been through this exact scenario.

    Car purchased new from dealer in August 2005.
    Brought the car over to France in 2007 and registered it there. I didn't notify Revenue or Shannon and I didn't claim a VRT refund.
    I handed the French authorities the VLC when getting my French 'Carte Grise'.

    I returned to Ireland with the car in 2013, driving legally on french plates. Called Shannon for advice and they told me that the car is still on their system, so there's nothing to do, just make a normal application for a 'lost VLC', cost €12.

    On receiving the VLC, I changed ownership to someone else, and back again to quash the tax arrears. The car did its 1st ever NCT on 13/01/2014 and passed, valid until 08/2015 (so back dated to the most recent anniversary 08/2013 + 2 years for being under 10yo).

    I can only guess that the french authorities did not return the VLC to Ireland and so the car was never marked as exported.
