ok so i bought a laptop with these specs

    i7
    8gb ram
    750 gb hd
    2gb nvidia card

now this machine was running ubuntu

so i downloaded windows 7 ultimate iso and booted it from usb key [ not activated yet ] but right click on my computer and properties says its only 2gb ram

i know for a fact it has 8 so why is it showing up 2 ? could this be due to not activated yet ?

    What does the BIOS say?

DEL, F2 or google for the key you need to get into the BIOS and check.

As far as i know Windows 7 32-bit supports 4GB RAM. Not 100 % there but I think so.

The fact that's it's over the supported amount though could be causing it to report it incorrectly.

it could be something to do with how i unstalled win 7 and the partition

If the BIOS says 2GB then it's Do Not Pass Go util you get that sorted.

    steps to try

    reset bios to default

remove battery and power cable press and hold on/off for a few minutes

use cpuz to see what it reports in SPD tab

    reseat ram.

try each ram on it's own

check if you are on the latest firmware

    Note
32bit windows NT/2K/XP only hands out 2GB of ram to individual apps unless you use the 3GB switch in boot.ini or whatever
But that's a red herring when BIOS don't see 8

machine was running ubuntu and i 100 % saw 8gb ram ok

but installed new windows os and checked the ram itself , and there is only 1 x 2gb and 1 x 4gb card in it , is it possible to for a laptop with 6gb ram to show up as having 8gb ? cause i did see 8gb
