Ultegra 6700 brakeset compatible with Sora?

    Hi,

I was looking as the Ultegra 6700 brakeset mentioned in the Bargain thread.

Before clicking buy I just wanted to be sure they are compatible with my current set up.

I currently have Tektro brakes and the rear one won't return to the "Open" position after releasing the brake lever. I assume the spring is gone and I was considering upgrading to the Ultegra set mentioned above.

Any issues with Sora shifters with Ultegra 6700 brakes, or am I good to go?

    Thanks

I'd say your rear calliper is full of dirt and gunk which could be why it's sticking. I've had the same thing happen and a good clean sorts it out. Remove the calliper and do a thorough cleaning.

Aside from that, I see no reason why the Sora levers won't work with 6700. If you do end up replacing the brakes then take the time to also replace the brake cables and maybe get some new bar tape.

    Thank you for the answer.

Dirt may well be a contributory factor. During the summer I'm pretty good at keeping the bike clean, but in winter it always seems too cold and wet to maintain standards.

You are such a spoilsport though, I was looking forward to some shiny new stuff! :p

I'm no expert, but the stock Tektro brakes don't seem great to me (even when clean), so I might try the Ultegra 6700 anyway. I already have the new cables ready to go, but I'm not great at the mechanical end of things, so wish me luck.

    Thanks again.

Bloody hell, the Ultegra brakes have gone up in price since yesterday.

Looks like I'll be cleaning the Tektro brakes thoroughly.

    Thanks for the advice.

In case the clean up doesn't go to plan. There are 105 5800 brakes on rubble just under €50. http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/road-track-bike/brakes-brakes-road-shimano-105-black-5800-11spd-brake-set/shimbrar564000000000

Ps credit where it's due, I saw this listed hduk.

    Thanks, Paddy

It's a good option if the clean up doesn't go well, will try and get around to it at the weekend.

The snob in me would probably think that for an extra fiver I could have got Ultegra if I'd bought yesterday.

However, to be honest it seems the newer 105 is probably just as good at the last generation Ultegra, and either are a big step up from the stock Tektro on the bike currently.

    Thanks again for the link.

FWIW, I upgraded from Tektro to 105 5800 last year and I find them a lot better. I've much more control with the 105 but they'll still jam if I don't keep them clean. The little roller in the 105 caliper is susceptible to gunk - especially if your using a mudguard that's mounted above the calipers.

Also good brake pads will make a sight more difference than the better calipers IMO.

I recently had this conversation with a club mate. Try not to be snobbish. The 5800 105 brakes are in my opinion (and indeed all the reviews) a good improvement on the 6700 ultegra. So I'd save the money and get the better 105 5800 brakes if you don't mind not having ultegra on your bike. As Cram said though calipers can only do so much. Blocks offer the most significant improvement for the least money in my opinion.

Will you get the full benefit of the Ultegra calipers with the Sora levers? Aren't the mechanics all different on the 6700s...something to do with pull ratios? or is this the 6800s?

    Thanks for all the replies.

I've already upgraded the brake pads to Swissstop greens, as they seem to get great reviews. However, I still don't find the brakes great, maybe I'm just expecting too much. I don't have much to compare it to, but my old ancient and cheap bike seemed to brake better (don't know what brakes they were).

I don't know about the levers at all, you might be right. However, I'm not in the market for upgrading the levers at the moment.

I was just joking about the snobbish Ultegra comment really. If they were the same price I'd go for Ultegra, but nothing wrong with 105 I'm sure.

Still haven't got round to cleaning the brakes yet, there is always tomorrow. :o
