    Well!

The fathers 9-3 has died. The ignition cassette is the culprit. We've got one out of a scrapper but god knows how long it'll last.

Is it worth replacing with an OEM part at 350 euro or a spurious part at about half that? It's the Tronic 5 red cassette.

Who's making all the spurious parts? Bosch, NGK? Anyone know where to buy a good one as the Saab part is fairly expensive.

'Spurious' (always thought that was a strange term for it, they're not actually fakes or such) parts are definitely not made by Bosch. Bosch makes the real things for the car manufacturers, but they can be had cheaper when bought as OEM as opposed to buying them with the car manufacturers name on it.

I tried aftermarket non-OEM a couple of times for smaller things like sensors etc but it never worked out for me and I ended up buying the OEM part in the end. When my ABS module went I never even thought about going non-OEM. Too expensive for experiments.

I'd just go with the one from the scrapper for the time being, it might last the lifetime of the car anyway.

Did you try Neo Bros in England? Their Saab specialists.

What year is the car? Is the engine B204 or B205? Very few 9-3's should have a red cassette but one can still be physically installed. However it won't work correctly.

I think the red cassettes may not be available as genuine part anymore and spurious parts don't last. They could literally burn within a day. Original parts are made by Swedish company SEM although the production was moved to China some years back.

And one more thing: The DIC and spark plugs have a really fundamental part on how the engine management works as it is used to detect engine knock. Only NGK plugs of right type gapped to 1.1mm should be used. Set of plugs costs about 10 yoyo and wrong or worn plugs affect the life time of the DIC. Ideally plugs should be changed every 10k km, especially on tuned engines, as the set is so cheap.
