    Is it normal nowadays for a washing machine in this case to be sold with just polystyrene panels and pvc wrap.

    Bought one last week and was told they had 1 left and boxed. Wondering if I just got a display model.

    Yes. Outer boxes aren't used. Not waterproof, show up dings worse, etc

    And boxes can be very awkward to remove: you might damage the machine (or yourself) with tilting and lifting.
