Deep Filling Problem

Hi to all the dentists on the forum!

Just looking for a bit of advice please,

In September I got a white filling on an upper back tooth. I had no problems with this tooth but an Xray at the check up had shown there was a cavity. Since I got it done that tooth has never felt 'right'! I don't have a lot of pain but most days there are times it is mildly sore. My cheekbone and temple will also be a little sore to touch. One night over Christmas it did develop into a toothache and I had to take pain killers but other than that it is just a bit of an irritation.

The problem is I don't know whether to go back to the dentist and take the risk that she may make it even worse or leave it and live with a slightly troublesome tooth!

I had absolutely no problem with this tooth before the dentist filled it - that is the annoying part. She did say it was a very deep filling.

All advice very welcome, thanks :-)

    Hi Fitzgeme,

Thanks for replying to my query. I did actually read that sticky before posting but I was confused - would my tooth have been fine if left alone - why to dentists suggest filling cavities if they know the tooth may need a root canal as a result?

    thanks!

Treatment at this stage may resolve the problem or unfortunately in some cases tip it over the edge...
No treatment allows the decay to continue and root canal is nearly inevitable then

    Last man in gets blamed

If your dentist decided to ignore or monitor this tooth , you may instead be posting that you need a root canal because my dentist did not fill a tooth at an earlier stage...

    No win situation...!!

    Hi Oral Surgeon,

Thanks for your post. Yea I am a bit afraid of going back for treatment. Also if I do decide to try to get it resolved, do I go back to the same dentist or find a new one? My work colleagues think I should definitely not go back to the same dentist as she mustn't have done a good job on the tooth. While my family advise going back as I paid quite a bit to get the filling.

Any advice on that? I know it seems trivial but I am a bit of a worrier so it is on my mind. I am unsure if the dentist made a mess of the filling or would any it have had this problem no matter who filled it............

    Thanks in advance :-)

    Hi again!

A couple of months back I posted about mild discomfort after a deep filling. I was convinced I needed a root canal. I went back to the dentist a few months later and luckily I did not need a root canal done. The dentist said that the sensitivity should go away eventually. The thing is with my concern/obsession about needing a root canal I totally forgot that a few years ago I had to get a white filling removed after a week due to severe pain. The dentist at the time said that some people can be intolerant to these composite fillings and he replaced it a silver one. I had no trouble after that.

I emailed my current dentist after remembering this and she agreed that could be the problem and that she would remove it if I wished. My concern is that if it is very deep the removal may cause bigger issues? I am not in constant pain or anything - just every now and then I have days where it bothers me and mildly aches and it spreads to my cheek/eye area.

I have OCD unfortunately so keep thinking I have brought this on myself for going to the dentist in the first place! I wasn't due a check up at the time.

Can any dentists on the forum advise on whether the removal of a deep composite filling (upper back) after about 10 months is advisable?

Many thanks - anyone with OCD will know how we can agonise over these things : -(

    Thanks in advance,
