Know two lads with them and there is a reason they go for that. Try buy a second hand engine for one. They put the big end out through the side nearly every time.

'Bout how much are a set of rear brake pads for a Landcruiser? Failed test on mine today.

We ended up putting in an engine into a navarra for the same reason! We got another engine out of a breakers in west cork. The sump is also fierce small for the size of the engine causing it to run a bit dry on the oil when she's under pressure. One thing about them is they're easy work on. Got a mitsubishi pajero and l200 since and can't fault them

You'll get a 2002 or 2003 3.0 Trooper with a dead engine for not much more than a grand. There is a lad in Offaly who will transplant the complete engine, box and 4wd from a 3.1 for about 1800. Bullet proof motoring for the next ten years.........
If you're into that sort of thing. :D

The day of converting the 3 litre troopers is nearly dead, unless you know the 3.1 donor engine it can be hit and miss. Why is he fitting the 3.1 box not using the 3 litre box and transfer box?

Because this way he eliminates both the dual mass flywheel, and all the "shift on the fly" 4wd electronic gubbins.
And the 3.1 gearbox ratios suit the 3.1 engine characteristics a bit better than the 3.0 ratios.

Fair enough, the 3 litre box on the 3.1 engine is a super job though. I get that the conventional 3.1 set up and a physical lever for 4wd instead of the electronics is a more reliable setup.

You have the slightly higher diff ratios with the 3.0 as well, so it drops your engine revs a bit at 60 mph. If you have your own good 3.1 donor, it's a good bit cheaper also.

    Who's this lad??

I'll hunt up his number for you. He was advertising on DD as Offaly Trooper Conversions back in November. Have a 2003 LWB that I plan to bring down to him.

Yeah they have that habit but you can do a job on them by replacing the big end bearings with a higher spec bearing s and bolts and you have a engine for life and parts are cheap because there are so many with engines gone

    thanks,

02/05 Hilux,go for ex model, basic jeep with very little goes wrong in them, some lads still want 6 or 7 grand for them but there there for less.
The ex model has no wheel arches or electric windows etc.

We bought a Kia Serento 2 years ago. Really didn't know a whole lot about them but took a punt on an 05 plate ex model with 92k kilometers for a little more than 4k. Its fairly basic but you get electric windows and having done a decent bit of research the only problem they give it that the timing belt can snap if left longer than the service interval which makes muck out of the flywheel. Its a demon for towing will handle the Ifor Williams with 5 bullocks no bother and its a seriously comfortable drive.

For that budget a 01 to 03 landcruiser with sub 200k and a doe. Descant tyres be a major plus.

Have a ssangyon Rexton, 06 for nearly 5 years now, couldn't fault it economical, super engine gearbox etc Mercedes own them in korea, it's no landcruiser to tow bit drives like a car and I do fair miles with work and no second car, put her in for pre test/service the last day with my garage and rust on rear chassis, looking like a scrap job now, have a fella to look at Saturday to see if it's repairable or bin it!

What is recommended economical 4wd? Landcruiser even lads that have them cannot defend their ability to drink diesel, not keen on pick ups seem lively at the back..any suggestions?!
