Diesel car - Avensis or Octavia?

I am looking at getting a diesel and would appreciate some opinions please.

The budget will be small but from what l have seen on DD, l would get an 05 or 06 octavia or avensis. I am not concerned about styling or things that are personal preference, its more the reputation for being reliable etc.

I am leaning to the avensis cos its appears a bit bigger inside.

Assuming the budget is around the €2-€3k mark, if you want reliable with less potential for problems then you need to be going petrol. No turbos, no injectors, not expensive clutch/DMF likely to fail etc.

Most diesel cars in this bracket will more than likely have high miles and be potential money pits.

A good diesel car with a moderate tax bracket that's been well looked after will be pretty rare in this price range.

I bought a 05 octavia 1.9 diesel I know people say it is not refined as 2.0) in 08 for 10k and had it for 5/6 years before i wrote it off and i swear to god that car never gave me an ounce of trouble. I got it with 50k miles on it and it was close to 200k miles when i sold it as damage repairable. Certainly from the drivers cabin perspective it had a ton of space. Cant really comment on the rear part. Obviously the boot was phenomenal on it. It was also very economical. Only ever had regular(ish) services with no parts needing replacement bar the tbelt.

I would take my chances with a 1.9 TDI Octavia over a D-4D Avensis.
You often find that Jettas are cheaper than Octavias too, so keep an eye out for them.
