What exactly do you mean by development squad? Very broad term and could be taken in many ways.

Underage, county teams ,like being brought in,gone through the county trials at underage, and then through to minor and senior.

Eh, 99% of footballers come through this way.

Virtually 99% will have played on county teams at underage be that u14 and all up to u16/minor/u21 or minor/u21 or just u21. Overwhelming majority will have played county teams at most age groups

A more interesting question would be are there any players who first played for their county at senior level having never lined out for their county at underage?

I know Ryan McMenamin was one of the more high profile players who never played minor or U21 for their county. I'm sure there are a few in every county that make a late step up.

No he didn't. He had been playing club with Austin Stacks and was helped in making senior side after playing on Underdogs team against Kerry.

Kieran Donaghy played for the Kerry u21s in 2003. The year Waterford beat them in the Munster final, that Kerry team also included Declan O'Sullivan and Colm Cooper.

Donaghy did play underage for Kerry.

He came on as a sub in the All-Ireland minor semi-final Kerry lost in 2001 versus Dublin and he played for the U21s for 2 years.

The day he came on as a sub for the minors in Croke Parj was the same day as the infamous Meath game.
Also on that Kerry minor team were Colm Cooper, Declan Sullivan, Bryan Sheehan, Donnacha Walsh.

I'm convinced that the Meath hammering was a factor in the development of the Kerry team of the noughties.

For the minors Cooper and Declan Sullivan were both in the full-forward line alongside Conall O'Cruadhlaoich who was top-scorer out of the 3 of them with 3-10 in 3 games. All 3 of Cooper, Declan Sull and O'Cruadhlaoich were 2 year minors but O'Cruadhlaoich never wore the green and gold again.

Also Donaghy played 2 years U-21. When you look at the forwards Kerry had in addition to Cooper and O'Sullivan in those teams, it's not at all surprising that Donaghy never played anywhere besides midfield underage - Bryan Sheehan, Dan Doona, Declan Quill, Conall O'Cruadhlaoich, DJ Fleming and another lad also called Declan O'Sullivan were all serious underage footballers. Even in terms of his competition for a midfield spot in those underage teams he was competing with Seamus Scanlon, Donnacha Walsh and Paddy Kelly who were all very decent players as well.

I feel honour-bound to point out that the following year the Kerry U21s beat Waterford 2-22 to 0-6. I'm nearly 100% this is the last time Waterford beat Kerry at any level at intercounty football.

3 of the starting backs who started that day never played for Kerry again.
1 of the other 3 played with the U21s the following year and the other 2 only made the Junior team.

Pearse o'Neill made his debut for Cork at 26

Never played minor or u21 with the county

Won an all-Ireland and an all-star so a decent return for a player who arrived on the scene that late

Seamus Harnedy didn't play any underage hurling for Cork and has won a hurling All Star.

Dont think John Doyle made the underage teams in Kildare, maybe a sub on the 21s
