Prov Moped/Bike Licence Query

    Hello,

I had a provisional driving license issued back in 2003/4 which had the categories for provisional moped/bike/tractor included.

When I got my full driving (car) licence in 2005, the provisional (learner) catergories for moped/bike/tractor were not included.

Now, I didn't cop it or need it until now when I'm thinking of getting a moped, but I'm wondering if I've to go through the application process again, or can I request that my original learner permit element be renewed?

I've emailed the NDLS a few days ago but nada thus far.

I think you'll need to start all over again with the bike theory test, get learner permit and then do IBT etc.

There's a very good chance that you still have the entitlement for mopeds as it would have been an automatic entitlement on passing your car driving test at the time. In 2005, you would have earned B, AM and W for passing the car test. Since 2006, they removed the automatic entitlement for AM and now all you get for passing the car test is B and W.

The Motor Tax Offices would often only add categories requested or the categories on the certificate of competency so there's a good chance you have the entitlement for AM only you need to have the category added to your actual full licence.

Having said that, for any full entitlement that you hold, if it does not appear on your licence for 10 years or more, the entitlement will be lost and not renewable. If you were given a full licence for, say, B only or B&W only but not AM, theoretically, you won't be able to renew it since it was issued in 2005 and 10 years has passed.... but it may be worth cribbing to the RSA to get the NDLS to reinstate it as it's only just expired.

My advice is to first of all, call the NDLS and ask two questions; a) if you hold the AM entitlement and b) *which version of the Driver Theory Test do you have on file- they will tell you over the phone in minutes.

If you have the AM full entitlement, go and have it added to your licence straight away before you lose the entitlement. *Maybe you've never sat a theory test as maybe you held your first provisionals before the theory test existed. If that's the case, you'd the adding the motorcycle theory test into the list of tasks to complete.

If you have lost the entitlement for AM or you have it but want to get on to larger bikes, come back here and I can let you know the process. It's a little complicated.
