    Hi.
I want to do a 12 day tour of about 1600KMs. I'd prefer a decent enough lightish road bike. A good hybrid is also an option. The thing is I need to put racks on to carry panniers and most bikes don't have the mounts for them. So I'm trying to find a decent bike that does.

Anybody out there into touring have any advice?

Are you carrying camping gear. If not I would suggest a saddlebag and bar bag solution for a total capacity of about 30litres. Depends on whether you are touring in warm or cold weather. You can get away with carrying a lot less in warmer climates.

some useful info in the thread below..

Edit: you probably need to post this in main cycling section..

Having toured on both road bikes and hybrids I have to say my own personal preference is a road bike. I have a Reynolds 531st steel bike and it has served me well on quite a few trips. I have also used my Trek 7.5fx for shorter tours around Ireland and found it perfectly fine aside form one thing. The road bike gives me better options for handling in terms I can change up my position. The Trek always have the mounts for racks so maybe you should consider them. They would be good for commuting too when you return. My steel bike sits in the attic most of the time which is a bit of a waste. I get rid but having spent so much time alone with it touring I'm just too attached to it. Good luck with the trip.
