Didn't see a thread on this. Headline on Morning Ireland this morning, I didn't hear the promised interview, but Irvine's posted a blog:

Well, I never actually thought this day would come. All through my cycling career I’ve seen teammates old and new “retire.” Something that I initially thought could be the worst thing ever to happen to me. As I sit here here now typing this it just feels right. Don’t get me wrong though, this decision I have not taken lightly.

Best of good luck to him. He's one of the loveliest people too. Enjoy retirement Martyn you've well deserved it!

One of the good guys and a world champion. A good decision and a great cyclist.

Hit the "Big Time" late in his career, and probably appreciated it all the more for that. I was hoping he might get to finish off in the Worlds in London, but maybe that provides a chance for someone from the younger generation to start making a name for themselves.

I'm sure we'll be seeing him around on the Open racing scene for some time to come, but those special performances he's delivered on the World scene over the past few years really will be missed.

All the best in your retirement Martyn - you really do deserve a long and happy one

thanks op for the post, i hadn't seen it, doesn't actually seem to be much coverage of it at all for some reason?

All the best for the future Martyn

It's actually been covered reasonably well this morning, I've heard it on Newstalk and I think RTE and it's on the main page on the Journal rather than being just in the sports section.

I heard mention on Newstalk, but it's typical Martyn. last thing he would want is a big song and dance about it and reading that blog post it is very low key

Anyway gadetra - maybe we'll get to see a bit more of him at Sundrive (and hopefully that new track once it's up and running)

ah fair play to NT for covering it - saw it there over on bike Comes First

he will be missed - hope we can produce another like him, won't be easy though.

Maybe didn't get the media recognition he deserved as a world champion (and we don't have too many of them) best of luck in the retirement.

I remember watching the scratch race and him breaking away with a dozen laps or so to go and then getting reeled in .
Thinking ah well, but as he held on I remembered its tough to pass on the bends and realised he was going to win.

    Brilliant race.

On some reflection I feel Martyn was robbed of some great results when the UCI and IOC destroyed endurance track cycling at the Olympics. The IP, Madison and Points events all suited him while the Omnium version they invented for the event is a bastardised mishmash of everything. Tries to suit everyone and ends up suiting no one....

Anyway a great career and a nice guy to boot.

Hope to see him race domestically and maybe take a few more track title at Sundrive and hopefully Abbotstown !!!!
