Browser and other issues

    Hey,

Over the last while the browsers that I used have been acting up. Safari and Firefox, mainly Safari. For example, I log into Gmail and my chat list on the left hand side frequently says 'something's not right', logging out has gone a bit weird and brings can error 'Safari cannot open the page'. A refresh usually solves this. I used to be able to search in the Safari search bar and it would me straight to the Google search result. This is acting up a bit too. I think Safari is generally the least recommended browser on here. :p

The other thing is that opening Twitter pages seems to frequently lead to beachballs for a while...it was the same on Yosemite. Then if Firefox acts my system tends to freeze for about 30 seconds, if not more. I've tried clearing the cache to no avail. I've 4GB of RAM and am running El Capitan on a 2008 iMac.

Also, and separate to this, over the last few days I've been prompted to install OS X. It says 'This copy of the Install OS X application is too old to be opened in this version of OS X'. Looking in software updates, it's offering me Yosemite Beta 4 - not sure why since I'm running 10.11.2...

I've been having issues too! Google.ie and Youtube are the two that are really struggling for me at the moment.

Have you tried creating a new user login account on the Mac and see if the problem goes away ? Might help to isolate the problem ? Your machine is almost Minimum spec for 10.11 so I wouldn't be expecting much from it.

Briefly, but I'm not patient enough to user another login for a day or two as a point of comparison. Safari seemed snappier in another user ID.

    Fair point.

Safari on my iPad Air 2 is currently terrible for the likes of TheJournal.ie - the pics don't show, at all. The standalone app is fine.
