Hi my husband and I would love to know how to get from brussels to brugge and potentially stopping in Gent along the way to see that castle on the water. What station would I go from and is it expensive. I have heard about some student discount which hopefully my sons can avail of.

    Thanks guys

    Go from grand central station.
Brussels to brugge is about 17 euro return. And its cheaper if you are under 25
Ghent is one of the stops on the way.

I did it in October and went to brugge first then got the train back to Brussels and stopped off in ghent and had a wander.
Last train from ghent to Brussels is at like 11pm

Just a Note to add! If you are fancying brekkie in brugge most of the places we found didnt open untill about half ten

Don't mean to come across too smart here, but google is your friend in this case.

So the castle is, I presume, Gravensteen - and you can see from google maps that Gent-Dampoort is the nearest station, just one mile away. bahn.de will give you info on train timetables, etc, in Belgium (throughout Europe, in fact). In general, they're very efficient though. There's lots of Brussels stations - are you leaving from the airport or the town centre? Either way - Centraal or Airport - it looks like one quick change will need to be made. There's a direct hourly train from Dampoort onwards to Brugge.

Info on discounted fares is available on the website of the Belgian railways. There's also a decent info area in Brussels Central station that'll help with all queries once you get there.

Many of the trains from Gent-Dampoort go via Antwerp, not Bruges, so you might have to change at Gent-Sint-Pieters. But it seems there's one train per hour direct from Dampoort to Bruges, so I would aim for that. Avoid Sint-Pieters if you're unfamiliar with it: although safe, it's just a huge, confusing, sprawling station.
