Fans going crazy when editing RAW images

Im using an Early 2011 OS X El Capitan Macbook Pro and I've been using it to edit RAW format images from my Nikon DSLR for ages without any hassle.

Today I took a few shots from a friend's newer camera and when I tried to view the raw images in preview, the fans on the laptop started going like crazy. I had tried to edit them in lightroom but it said the lightroom version was too old for these newer RAW format images. Thats why I went to preview.

I'm wondering is my 2011 Mac with 2011 software starting to get 'old' or is there something I can check to sort this out? (I know I'll need updated lightroom software but I thought Preview would handle them fine).

    Thanks!
