    Hi lads,

Quick question, my Triton T90 gave up the ghost after 13 years of use...I plan on replacing it myself with one of the new model Trident T90z , there are two models 8.5 KW @ 220€ and 9.5KW @ 280€.

Is it worthwhile paying an extra 60€ for the 9.5KW MODEL?

    Thanks

    Mike

Just replaced my T90XR 8.5Kw with a T90Z 8.5kw. You would need to check the MCB/RCBO as mine was rated 32amp. the 8.5KW should be fine.
If you go for the 9.5KW you may need to change to a 40 amp MCB/RCBO given the higher power output.

    Hi
Thanks for the info.......how do I go about checking the rating of my current MCB?

It should be an RCBO and it will be printed on it, the wiring size would need to be confirmed to be of a suitable sectional area to suit a 9.5kw shower, in the event when the 8.5kw shower was installed, if only the minimum allowable wiring size was fitted.

Am I right in thinking that my T90 was 8.5KW?? I guess it's a no brainier then to fit the new 8.5 model....

    Thanks for the replies

    Right
I've checked my RCBO and it has "B40" printed on it.
I'm assuming this means it's rated up to 40 amp and should be OK to install 9.5kw model?

I would always advise installing a 9.5KW as against an 8.5KW, where practicable. The flowrate from an electric shower is mean enough as it is, a 9.5 KW will give 3.78 LPM heating water from say 6C to 42C, the 8.5 KW will give 3.38 LPM and the human body is extraordinary at detecting even seemingly small changes in temperature/flow changes. If you are exchanging like for like, an 8.5 KW for an 8.5KW, then just maybe OK as you will not feel any difference but if the old shower was an 9.5 KW and you are replaing it with the 8.5 KW the you will be forever regretting it as you will certainly detect the difference and so too will your partner/children or whatever and you will be reminded of your "error" for the rest of your life.

Fuses / breakers whatever are there to protect the weakest link - whether it's the cable / plug&sockety thing / connector

sometimes the barely (~ legally) required minimum cable was put in

More than 99% of showers installed were installed using 6mm cable. 6mm cable is usually safe up to 9 kw. I say usually because your sparks has lots of calculations to do. A lot of it depends on the length of the cable run.

I can't stress this enough 9.5 kw showers ALWAYS need 10mm cable. Forget about the rcbo. If its 32amp it'll blow quicker but you can burn your home down with the wrong size cable. I suggest that a moderator move this to the electric form. You really need proper advice on this.

Btw a 9.5 kw shower requires a 45amp rcbo not a 40amp. Like I say get the electricians advice on this not the plumber.

Thanks all for the advice, not as plug and play as I had originally thought.....im getting a sparks to come and look at it later today

    Hi,

First time posting on here. I was reading this thread and found myself in a similar position. We've just moved into a second hand house (built circa. 1999) and are looking to renovate the main bathroom. It currently has no shower, only bath tub. If putting in an electric shower from scratch as it were, is it worthwhile just going for the 9.5 Triton t90 as cables are going to have to be laid either way? Thanks for the advice!

Certainly get 10 mm cable installed regardless.

Personally I'd put in the 9.5kw if it were me it's only an extra 50 euro or so. I have to stress that there is very little difference between the 2 but as someone else said earlier every little helps.
