1997 CLK200 Alarm/hazard lights

I have a 1997 Mercedes CLK200 that has been parked up for the last couple of months. The battery in it was dead so I jump started it. Once the car was started the hazard lights came on and won't stop flashing. They are flashing faster than normal for hazard lights and a quick search online suggested that the alarm in these cars can do strange things when the battery voltage is low. I changed the battery for one that was good and initially it looked like the problem was fixed however after about 2 minutes the lights started flashing again. Has anyone come across this before? or have any idea what might be wrong?

Any help would be really really appreciated. :)

Did you check to see is the new battery actually charging or is the alternator gone faulty?

I didn't actually check. There was no battery light on so I assumed it was ok. I'll actually check it now in 1/2 an hour or so.

OK had a chance to have a look at a couple of things. Batter voltage was 12.4V before starting the car, it went up to 13.8 when the car was idling. Probably not the greatest but definitely charging.

The hazard lights flash all the time but I noticed some new things about them. With the ignition off they flash at the "alarm" setting but with the ignition on they flash at the normal hazard light setting. With the car running they keep flashing at the normal hazard frequency. If you turn the indicator on it works as normal but the hazards come back on as soon as you turn the indicator off.

The only way I can get them to stop is to pull fuse 41 but then the indicators don't work either...

Any other ideas of things to check? I do appreciate the help :)

So I had another chance to look at the CLK yesterday. I don't know where the alarm module is so if someone can help me locate it it would be much appreciated :)

Yesterday when I connected the battery the Hazards didn't flash and I thought it had magically fixed itself :P. But the indicators wouldn't work at all :( Then after about an hour of the battery being connected the hazards started to flash again and I'm now back to where I was the other weekend.

I did take out the vacuum pump for the locking and brought it in to the house as I suspected it might have got damp. When I brought it in and looked it was dry inside.

Any and all ideas are welcome :)

Well lads I'm still struggling with this. I noticed a new thing today, I pulled the fuse 41 with the car running. This stopped the lights flashing (fuse for the indicators and hazard lights). When I put it back in however the lights didn't flash again...But now the indicators don't work at all, neither does the horn, the wipers the washers... Basically nothing on the stalk or the horn except the main beams. The cruise control still works though. Just nothing else on the column except the high beam and the CC.

I have decided that there is a relay or something somewhere that controls all of these and I believe it is the fault. This car has had a fault for a while where occasionally where the horn would beep the windscreen would wash and wipe at the same time for no reason. I believe this problem has just worsened. Does anyone have any ideas? The fuse isn't blown BTW :)

Good news everyone. I used my day off today to work on the Merc. I found that the SAM module in the engine bay fuse box had got filled with rain water. Obviously the poor design and being out in the heavy rain without being used took its toll. The circuit board had corrosion on it from being submerged. As a long shot I cleaned the corrosion off on the off chance that some of it was shorting off some tracks. Would you believe it worked!!! Car is working perfectly all day :D:D
