Brick sills and water repellent good idea?

Looking for a bit of advice in brickwork. I have brick sills in all my windows. Last summer I decided to clean one of them with water and a hard brush. Whatever I did I am not sure if I screwed them up. They did get cleaned alright , although I think I discolored them at bit, but since then when it rains they seem to absorb a lot water and take days for some of them to fully dry. I also noticed two crack in two of them which I am not sure if there were there before. They are also getting a bit damped.

    Questions:
1- Did I brush off some sort of coating which I was not meant to?
2- Would it be any good for me to apply some water repellent?

    Hope to hear back.
