Legality of switching odometer from miles to kilometres

    Hi all,

Since I'll be retrofitting cruise control on my Focus in the coming week I'm thinking of changing the odometer (mileage and trip) display from miles to kilometres.

Is it legal? I know clocking is not allowed by my plan is to change the display units into kilometres instead of the miles that it currently shows.

Obviously the mileage will be converted into KM and it won't show the miles + a km symbol :D

What happens with NCT? My previous NCT certificates have the odometer value shown in miles but will they continue using miles when I switch to kilometres?

Not sure I follow, you can do this via the setting menu anyway? Since you can switch back and forth, I don't see the issue. One thing I noticed in my Focus, if I switch to miles, temperature will switch to Farenheit and fuel consumption to l/100k.

With the newer Fords you can't. All I can do with the mondeo is change the trip computer (the one you can reset) between miles and kilometers. The actual odometer is in miles and can't be changed.

    Exactly.

The actual mileage for the car and the trip meters do not change to KM even if you set it to metric on the cluster.

This is what I'd like to change as I've never used the imperial system and I really don't have much knowledge in it.

Makes sense considering your avatar looks like a rebel alliance pilot. :p
    No use for the empire.

The dealer can maybe do this via a software update?

If you have to replace the cluster it's going to be costly and will look dodgy on any mileage report unless you get them to set it to the exact mileage that was on it before and keep receipts for the work done.

Doesn't seem worth it IMO if you have to start replacing clusters.

Yeah I wouldn't do it by replacing the cluster.

You can do it yourself using a modified ELM327 though :D I'm just wondering if I would have any problems with the NCT seeing as they record mileage.

Yeah , no issue legally with changing from kms to miles.
When you get your nct cert check the mileage is correct before you leave.
They have been known to make mistakes regarding miles/km

While there would be no issue legally with changing to kms, I could see it causing problems when you trying to sell the car on. If a car has a speedo in mph then people will expect the mileage to be in miles and I know I'd be asking questions as to why the mileage was changed. Someone could decide to change a car from miles to km and 'forget' to multiply the number from miles to km for example and hey presto the mileage is a lot lower.

Trust me, when I sell that car it will already have too much mileage for a potential owner to care :D

It's sitting at 133k miles right now!
