strange question but is it unusual to see butterflies at this time of year? one just flew into my kitchen, seems a little dazed!

I'd guess it's a tortoiseshell... They overwinter in houses and dry sheds, often in curtains or other fabrics, and will flutter out in typical dazed fashion if disturbed during the winter months.
