    folks,

we bought an island cooker hood to hang over the cooker.
its 15kg and hangs from a disk thats about 15cm diameter.
now the issue I have is I have no option but to hang it in a particular spot and I am not sure there is a joist over it I can hang it from

Do folks think that drilling into the rigid insulation above the plasterboard with those new insulation screws would be sufficient to keep this baby up ?

    thanks
    Rob

Can you take up any of the floor above and put in a timber support?

I wouldn't go trying to fix anything to insulation.

    I wouldn't.

Any access from overhead to put in a ground?

You will need to put "grounds" in. Mark out where your screw fixings are to go on the ceiling. Then using a straight edge mark out lines to these holes way beyond where they go. So if there are 4 fixings you end up with a ceiling looking like a large x and o game. Then cut out plasterboard and put in some 2 by 4 timber fixing it to existing timber in ceiling. Put the plaster board back in, or replace with new plasterboard. Plaster ceiling. Hang hood. Lastly paint over your x and o game. Attaching to insulation will fall down, probably the same day. Dont forget your power and ducting. Position them correctly. Good luck also. Its a pain in the ass job.

I think having looked at it that I might be in luck.

From the photo attached you can see that the roof window is pretty much in line with the required position of the cooker hood plate. I presume that there is a joist running along the side of the window, I know they run in the direction towards the electric cable seen hanging from the ceiling.

Given that I have a 6 inch area to work with I am thinking I could surely find the joist within that area. If I can get 2 or 3 6 inch screws into the joist I should be ok.

The power is there and its a recirculating hood.

The builders, more than likely, would have put in grounds already.

wytch's way is good but I'd try the lazy mans way first. Put the 15cm disc that it hangs from up. Mark it out and cut out plasterboard slightly smaller with a pad saw. Then have a look and see whats what. You might be able to fix more supports through that hole or see where you can fix it. Either way the hole you cut will never be seen again.
