Hi just wondering if anyone knows where its possible to buy a single 6/7/8 speed compatible rear cog to put on a cassette ? I got a second hand bike that has a 7 speed cassette on an 8 speed hub and Id like to put another gear on there .

    Thanks a Mill ,

    Barry

A complete 8 speed cassette is what you need. They're cheap enough. You'll get a Shimano 8 speed cassette for just over €13. That's just an example - there are many more.

The most important thing is your shifter (I'm assuming it's indexed). If it's a 7 speed shifter then it won't work with an 8 speed cassette as it won't have the eighth shift. In that case you'll also need a new 8 speed shifter which is a little more expensive.

You'll get better value if you go for a used set but if you're going to spend money then I'd recommend going to 10 or 11 speed - not much point in spending money for one extra gear, although, you'll need to be sure that your wheel/hub can take the cassette. Stick a wanted ad in the Cycling Adverts forum and see if someone has what you're looking for.

And before someone else says it - new bike.....? :D

    Hi Crosstown ,

    Thanks for the info ,

So .... If the hub is an 8 speed hub which Im almost sure it is , does that mean I can put nine or ten speed on it ?

    Thanks

There's a good chance you can fit a 9/10 but that will depend on your current hub type & brand.

Loads of info here to really confuse you.
