Will be interesting who will present the new show and what innovation s will they incorporate.
C4 lost a lot of viewers changing a lot of presenters recently

Very interesting indeed. Not suprised though as some of the presenters on C4 are awful. Cunningham would work wonders putting people asleep. The days when they got rid of Francome and cut Downes to smaller slots they lost a lot of viewers i think.

Not sure itv have a great record of taking on other sports such as the time they had the Motd or fa cup rights for footie they had a nightmare.

Just hope they get some knowledgeble presenters in and not some ex footballer or adrian chiles who hasnt a clue whats going on to present it and hope they dont use it as a fashion show.

Also they better not be putting it on one of their sister channels like itv2,3,4. Anyway its a suprise

Yeah if it goes to itv4 for some days it will make a mess of it.
I like chapman for the job like marmite but I think he would draw enough viewers with him on it.

Someone even went to the liberty of making a (fake, I hope) official website for the switch! http://www.itvracing.com/

Most of you guys too young to remember the ITV 7 every Sat before CH4 won the rights .
From memory most of the presenters and commentators went over to CH4 .
It was a pure racing programme with no extraneous twaddle .

I remember it, quality show. Make no mistake though, we're not going back to that. If anything, the answer to falling ratings will probably be to introduce more fashion and other twaddle.

The reason the falling ratings are down to the fact you dont have to sit down and watch the racing in your house nowadays. Mobiles, ipads etc are having a huge effect on viewing figures. Its so easy now to set up an account and do a bet to watch the racing. Doesnt matter what channel they are on it wont improve the viewing figures imo. Chapman would be some crack, i know he is marmite but he doesnt shirk from asking the questions we want to hear

All the main meets will be on ITV1 the rest on ITV4. I have a suspicion that the late afternoon races of the Spring and summer festivals will be on ITV4 as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 114 ✭✭closcriobh

The ITV4 feed on Virgin is horrendous and we don't even receive ITV. I'd hope that someone's thinking of us in Ireland as we should at least be able to watch HD terrestrial racing.

    Seems terrible news.

I hated the changes Channel 4 made as well though.

The thoughts of Cheltenham on another channel is dreadful.

No more Morning Line, aarghhhhh I can't handle it.

Hopefully there will be improvements from ITV.

C4, in my opinion had gotten poor enough, to the point that Id barely watch what was going on inbetween races.
Cunningham annoys and bores the hell out of me.
Mick Fitz while a decent jockey, I felt was a poor pundit who I felt wasn't right giving his expert opinion on flat racing.
The love fest that C4 had with Dettori was sickening.
I never understood what role Alice Plunkett nor Gina Bryce had on the programme, useless.
Gok on the fashion caused me to actually switch over.
The Morning Line had gotten poor too. That one over the Christmas with Mattie Batchelors Facebook page was car crash tv.

If any of the current crew to be saved and kept on, I'd be happy to see Nick Luck (he's not too bad) Emma because Id happily waste to 9st 10 to get the ride on her and to give Alistair Down a bigger role.
Simon Holt is the best commentator out there.

In my opinion, whatever ITV plan to do with it cant be much worse than what C4 have made it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,376 ✭✭✭Shemale

I would be amazed if it could be made worse by ITV, whoever came up the changes at C4 should be tied to the ground, trampled by horses, given 500 hundred paper cuts, doused in vinegar and be made watch the program.

    Matty "****ing sap" Batchelor,
Gina "clueless **** in a car" Bryce,
Rishi "positive discrimination" Persad, smirking like Kevin from Sin City,
Clare "clueless inspite of my familys involvement" Balding,
Mick "on the fence but isn't Nicky Henderson brilliant" Fitzgerald
Emma "banged most of racing and still know nothing" Spencer
Jim "so boring he can't keep his own eyes open" Mc Grath
Graham "knows a fair bit but delivers it like a lulaby" Cunningham
Alice "snipey, snide and clueless" Plunkett

If they are bringing people over it would be a very short list:

    Simon Holt,
    Richard Hoiles,
Tanya Stephenson (most knowledgeable female on the show by a million miles)
    Nick Luck (maybe)

One thing definitely required get rid of tarts who get awarded for going to a ****ing clothes shop and GET AL DOWN BACK!!!

34 days on itv1 and 60 on itv4 not good for sky Ireland for recording it will itv Ireland be showing it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,552 ✭✭✭chinguetti

Well at least with C4 you could see the racing, bad and all as they have become. ITV won't have thought or cared for viewers in Ireland as had happened with other sporting events they have rights for/about to get. Why would they as advertisers don't know we exist and can't get their products.

We'll see nothing on the good Saturdays as UTV won't take the packages as they'll just stick on some movie. Moving races to a mainly secondary channel which ITV4 is will kill off racing on mainstream telly by the time the next package comes around.

Its becoming a niche sport before our eyes as had happened for the last 10 years.

Be happy you can watch it at all.

UPC (Virgin media) carries the dreadful UTV Ireland instead of the actual UTV. We have no access to the actual UTV so won't be able to watch.

    This is absolutely disastrous news.

It has to be said though, what a mess C4 Racing has become since Highflyer lost the productions rights. As others have said, borderline unwatchable between races with Holt being one of the few saving graces. I also cannot for the life of me understand why C4 gave up on Ted Walsh at Cheltenham.

I hope UTV Ireland will be sorted out by then and ITV show it in the republic. It'll be a disaster for racing fans here otherwise.

I doubt this will happen as UTV Ireland will never form part of the ITV Network as it doesn't broadcast within the UK.

Will require separate contracts between UTV Ireland and Racing UK which I doubt will happen. Expect reruns of Doc Martin instead.

Just hoping that UTV Ireland collapses by the start of 2017 leading to the return of ITV to UPC.

Good move by ITV. Most terrestrial tv will be gone within a decade, with the only real item vying for viewers being live sport. Ch 4 made an absolute horlicks of the morning line. The worst thing you can do is give decision making power to those who have no clue what they are at or are unlikely to be impacted by the consequences. You reap what you sow, and in c4's case, destroyed a functioning franchise in a little under 12 months. Impressive.

Id have to disagree here. It always amazes me how the same programme can be switched to a different station, but have vastly different viewing numbers.
There is such a thing as station loyalty. Some people will watch whatever is on RTE1 or BBC1 for example, which is why I think it was inevitable that ratings for the marquee festivals would drop once they appeared on Channel 4, no matter what they did to present it.
If the Grand National meeting and the Cheltenham Festival were returned to BBC1, ratings would rocket up again, purely because its on BBC. Moving a programme further down the dial will always harm its ratings, because the masses just wont bother their ass picking up the remote.
We can blame Channel 4's boring presenters, or their attempts to modernise it by adding in fashion segments and the like, but I dont think its their fault really. IMO, they were doomed because they are not called BBC1.

Saw this on Twitter today. Thankfully we use a satellite dish rather than having to subscribe to any of the packages on offer, so can still receive the 'proper' ITV (UTV Ireland is an absolute joke!)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,339 ✭✭✭convert

Oh God, could you imagine more Gok going on and on and on about the 'pretty' and stylish way all the ladies are dressed on ladies day rather than actually hearing about the horses and yards, or having the 'behind the scenes' footage from yard visits! The nightmares!

ch4 will be a huge loss but when they changed everything round they made a horlix of it, watching balding ughh was like a bad equine version of pet rescue woefull, the collection of bimbo's also made it painful and then the bs with the fashion crap , who needs this stuff?

I remember the old itv - brough scott, lord oaksey and john rickman and co real racing folks who knew their stuff, some of the whitbreads are on youtube including mill house's great win in 67 after years of hammerings from himself worth watching.

ps for those wishing racing was back on bbc - don't forget rishi and balding and co all came from there!! so no doubt theyd be taken back on there if it happened dread the thought!

Matt Chapman is a must to headline this for ITV. The fact the majority of the racing public have an opinion on him speaks volumes, he is doing something right (or wrong) depending on your opinion of him. Personally I think he is great.

He is the only presenter of the Sunday Forum that is any good!

Did you see the state of it yesterday, that boring old useless fart, Bob Cooper, presenting it with Gay Kelleway and Hayley Turner in there for a 'Women in Racing' special

Pity nobody brought up Kelleway's 'No lose' account with Chandler's all those years ago!
