For me it would be a coin toss between charleroi in Belgium and romans d'isonzo in northern Italy.
Got stuck in charleroi after the final flight out got cancelled and ended up stuck that utter ****hole until the flight back to Dublin the following day. Literally couldn't wait to leave the place, rude and seemingly dangerous place to camp out in.
I got stuck in the north of Italy after arranging to propose to my then girlfriend in Rome and arranged everything to be in Rome before midnight to pop the question.
Had a nice hotel booked as well.
The moment we crossed the border the turbo blew up and left us stranded at the side of the motorway waiting a tow truck. Ended up proposing in the tiny hotel room overlooking a factory, luckily she said yes :)
Ended up getting food poisoning that night and all.
Lost a fortune that night but at least it provides a funny story with a nice outcome.
How about the rest of you? Anywhere you got stuck in on nwe that you detested?

Spent last year in Carrick-on-Shannon, which was pretty traumatic.

    Working behind a bar.

Some random pub with dangerously large crowds ensuring that every trip to the bar took at least half an hour. Seemed to be the norm during the mid 00s. Sweating, squeezed on all sides, with overrated forced merriment even though no one could really hear each other...they were all awful.

This. I remember one year running out of ice and having to run around the town filling up a bag of ice from a number of neighbouring pubs..

I would have gone for a more " La Di Da" approach

Wouldn't call being in charleroi a "I'm travelled" thread :P

My comment was a veiled "look at my seething jealousy through the medium of sarcasm". :pac:

I was once on the toilet during a New Years Eve countdown - I thought I'd have the time to finish! How's that for anti-climactic.

A family gathering a rural pub which was the local venue. Packed to the rafters with all sorts; practically hand to hand combat to get to the bar, deafening Nathan Carter type music, small children brought to the event who ran riot on the dance floor, shouting inanities at people all night, a complete disaster. I drive past it very occasionally and get the shakes at the sight of it. L

At my house on new years eve 1999. Not because of the place, but because my father had been laying in bed sick since Christmas. On new years eve the doctor told my family he was going to die so that night we were all crowded around his bed. We did the same every night until the 4th of January 2000 when he finally breathed his last breath.

So the worst place I ever spent new years is beside my fathers death bed.

Lebanon.. The fireworks were pretty dangerous too

I'll be writing a strongly worded letter to the Hezbollah, the Israeli Defense Forces, Islamic Resistance & the South Lebanese Army.

Down with this sort of stuff.

Killarney. Not so much the venue but the wicked dose of the trots I had. Lost count after twenty visits to the loo. Then had a wedding down there on the 2nd...overdosed on Immodium and had the opposite problem.

Don't EVER go to Blackpool. All of those images you have on television of the pleasure beach and pier are only part of the story. If you decide to go for a drink in the city of Blackpool, away from the prom, you are taking your life in your hands. I've never seen so many rows, and so many police cuffing blokes, on a night out. Police vans everywhere. Counted around 10 of them. I believe it's no accident. Is supposed to be a rough spot at other times too. My advice - stay in your hotel if you are there
