Water mains - leak - advice needed

    Hi folks. Happy new year.

The main water line into our apartment started leaking last night (and down in to the apartment below)

There is a pressure gauge built/screwed in to the main line and this is that source of the leak. I've managed the shut the water mains off to stop any further flooding. We've no running water at the moment.

Hadn't had any luck in getting through to our Letting Agent's '24 Hour Emergency Hotline' Any idea what I should do - seeing it's New Years Day etc? Is this a big job? I should be clearing any work through the letting agency but sort of stuck seeing as I can't get through to them.

    Thanks.

It's hard to see where exactly the leak is coming from. Maybe just turn the water on and off as you need it until you can get through to your agency

    Thanks for the advice.

I didn't examine it too much but from looking at it last night it looked like the leak was coming from this area:

If I had a plug in could try take out the pressure gauge and replace it with that until such time as the plumber got out.

No idea where to get a plug today though.

It'd be hard to get a plug or replacement gauge today

you'd get a plug from b and q or woodies today, or possibly a new gauge

It's a fair bit - spraying out and over the course of probably a half hour it leaked down to the apartment below us.

You can see what in the guage
Go down to you can do it
Buy the guage, usually 3/8 and a roll of ptfe tape. Apply the tape clockwise to the new guage thread till its fairly well wrapped and make it in
Spend more time getting your stock

    Best of luck

The seal inside the gauge is busted, (I've seen it happen many times) thats why the gauge has water behind the glass.
I have seen these or similar gauges for sale in B&Q and the odd time in Woodies, so they would be your best bet today for a replacement.
Alternatively you could call up a local plumber, describe the problem and send them the pic so that they know to only call out if they are in a position to replace the gauge.
As for your letting agent etc.
If you have made the effort to contact the out of hours numbers given to you, make sure you have left voice mail. If its a mobile number, send texts. If all that fails call the plumber, but you will have to pay him, just make sure you get a proper receipt.
Between the pictures, proof of trying to contact them and your receipt for the work done you should have no problems getting reimbursed.
If you do it yourself, you may be lucky to get the price of the gauge back off them.
Take plenty of photographs of the water damaged areas as this will be needed for any insurance claims.

If you can take off the gauge you should be able to plug the hole in the gauge with glue or similar. You could then replace the gauge and it would act as a plug.

Please follow site and charter rules. "Resistance is futile"

Got sorted - fitted a new gauge and it looks good. We were lucky that we were home to catch it in time before it did serious damage.

Thanks everyone here who replied - ye're sound out.
