    hello,

I have a query regarding car hire insurance , living abroad at the moment, come home to Ireland 2-4 times a year, I always hire my car through Hertz as my employer has a corporate discount scheme with them. My query is related to the insurance normally I just put it on my credit card rather than pay a daily fee for it. Has anyone got any other suggestions, is it possible to buy insurance in a manner similar to travel insurance.

    Thanking you all in advance.

I don't think insurance companies here offer short term car insurance. In any case any such policy would probably exclude you to drive a hire car.

I currently have an annual policy with icarinsurance. Some places still put a hold amount on the cc but at least I have actual insurance cover in case anything goes awry

    Works a treat.

This is insurance for the excess, not the main insurance itself.

Car hire insurance is an underdeveloped market. The typical Irish ex-pat, who learned to drive in Ireland, and who returns a couple of times a year mostly driving roads they know well is a relatively low risk compared to some tourist that has never been here. Yet the insurance market doesn't manage to differentiate the two.

If this is rental insurance provided by your credit card, you should call them to see if it covers you here in Ireland for what you expect. In my experience at least some credit cards explicitly exclude Ireland for such cover.

If it does, great! But if it doesn't better to find out before you need it!
