This has probably been covered before but I'm looking to import a commercial vehicle from the UK. I have a registered VAT number etc so dont have to pay vat in the UK but would I be right in saying that I'll be charged VAT on arrival in Ireland and then I will have to claim that back? Any help would be appreciated.

    No.
you account for the VAT in your bimonthly vat return, as follows

1.You become liable for the VAT on acquisition in Ireland. What this means is that you must account for it as a VAT on Sale (in the T1 section of the VAT return) at the standard rate of VAT on the purchase price.

2.You are entitled to claim an input credit for the same amount in the VAT on Purchases on the VAT return (Box T2) This gives a NIL liability on the VAT return

If you have any doubt, talk to your accountant

Anything i got from the North it was just cleared and it was alright..

    VAT
If you are importing a new car from another EU country you have to pay VAT (Value Added Tax), usually when registering the car. A new car means a car that has been in service for 6 months or less, or has been driven for 6,000 kilometres or less. The VAT is payable even where you have paid VAT in the other country.

If you are importing a new or second hand car from outside the EU, VAT (and customs duty) is payable. Customs duty is paid when the vehicle first enters the EU, at the point of entry. You must have proof of payment of this when you are registering the car in Ireland - see 'How to apply' below.
