    Hey all,

I'd love to start wearing lippy. I can never find one I'm happy with. I want to start with something not too bright suitable for a professional environment....(not red, hot pink etc) Can anybody suggest one or a brand even to start with?

    1) not matt, I prefer creamy texture;
    2) I'm really sensitive to smell (the cheaper lippies smell horrible and I've a UD lip gloss that is AWFUL) so either fragrance free/ nice smell. (MAC vanilla smell is fine).
    3) I want to look like I'm wearing lipstick my lips are quite pigmented naturally.
    4) I can't decide if I'm fair or not! I have black hair and skin that tans but I'm quite pale with red cheeks! I wear gold jewellery not silver.

    Any advice?!

I just started wearing lipstick and this stuff is amazing. Stays on all day (particularly if you apply, allow dry, apply again, allow dry, then use the gloss). Lots of shades from very natural to very glam.

I never wore it before because it would be licked off, smoked off or on my tea cup within minutes of application. And because I've quite thin lips so they're not a great feature. But a nice glossy pearlescent one plumps them up a bit.

Maybelline Colour Sensational are lovely, not too expensive and although they are matte they are actually very creamy. They don't wear off and the colours are nice, not too bold so good for work.

MAC are dearer but have a huge range of colours. Faux, Brave, Mehr, Kinda Sexy and Twig would be my own go-to colours for work. They're all kinda neutral/pinky/my lips but better kinda colours. I like berry colours too for a pop of colour without the boldness of red, MAC Rebel and Diva are lovely.

Thanks Val; I went to Mac... The choice really was huuuuuge. I ended up with Mehr and I love it even though it's matt it feels and looks great. I want to get a couple more and will definitely check out the colours you suggested. I would like a berry colour. I tried velvet teddy which is supposed to be very popular... hated it- I looked very ashen. Thanks for the help!

Yeah the choice can be overwhelming!

I have Velvet Teddy, bought it online without seeing it in person - huge mistake! Maybe I got a bad one as it looks pink/neutral online but it's very orangey on me and I hate it. :o:p

Faux, syrup and brave are also my recommendations, fab colours to give your face a lift but still be appropriate. I also find the revlon lip crayon in Honey to be a very good option, its creamy but when it wears away it leaves a stain so you still have some colour there.

Creme Cup by Mac is one of my favourites! It is a cremesheen finish :)

I love love love Stoned Rose by Charlotte Tilsbury. It's nice and creamy, and a nice subtle shade. Loads of people have complimented it on me.

If you're interested in a cheaper option, I love the Bourjois lipstick in 02 Beige Trench - very much a 'my lips but better' colour on me.

I second Mac syrup and add Revlon Suede lipstick in womenswear. It's long lasting which is great for the office. Goes on creamy and feels like suede then drys to a long lasting colour.

I have a huge lipstick collection. I have downsized it from over 100 to 40ish.

Like all make up, no lipstick looks the same on another person. There are too many variables: How pigmented your lips are, your skin tone, your undertones, your overall makeup style. So, the recs here might be a good start but I strongly rec for you to go and try any lipstick on before buying. Not on your hands, but actually on your lips. For ex, I am a bright winter with cool yellow undertones, which is hard to work with as everyone seems to think that yellow undertones can only be warm. I need lots of saturation in my colour make up, so most of the classic nude or MLBB shades look horrendous on me. In short, you need lots of trial and error.

In terms of formula, you can't beat Guerlain and Givenchy at the higher price point. MAC is great for the mid price range. I'd rec Amplified and Cremesheen finishes for your preferences. At Boots, I always find the best formulas at Revlon and Rimmel.

    HTH.

    OP here.

I think I've now become addicted to lippy?!!!

I bought Mac New York Apple.. its a frost one I really like it. I'm finding the matte Mehr I bought originally quite drying and I don't get dry lips. I also got maybelline divine wine and magenta... 2 for 15e in Boots. My confidence has gone from zero to 8 with lip stick colours :)

As another that is addicted to lipstick, I get you :D I don't like MAC Matte formula AT ALL. I've gotten rid of all my MAC lipsticks that were not Amplified or Cremesheen :)

    Op here

I got mac retro ... love it! I don't think it's very popular but such a nice colour. It does feel matte I think it's satin. I bought creme in your coffee yesterday. Really nice browny tint. My first cream sheen Mac. Both great colours for the office.

Still haven't found my "can't live without lippy" but I'm a novice and will enjoy trying and buying in the mean time. The addiction is real girls lol - don't say I didn't warn you :)

Creme in your coffee by Mac (nude brown, some days I love it and other days I think it's slightly too dark for me)
    Stoned rose by Charlotte Tilbury
Sandwash Pink by Bobbi Brown, probably my favourite 'your lips but better' shade.

I use the Charlotte tilbury lip liner in pillowtalk with all those colours.
