4m40 long block is 250kg dry, with turbo/oil/flywheel probably in the 270-280kg range.

hmmmm where did you find that? reason i ask is i was thinking it would be a lighter more powerful engine than that of a landrover 300tdi, im building an off road buggy and weight is the key

Lightweight offroad buggy, I'd be staying away from a diesel and going for a lightweight petrol unit, sure you could find a nice petrol which would give you good power, you may need to mess with the gearing but it wouldn't be the end of the world.
A big heavy lump of a diesel wouldn't be my starting point.
How about a Honda 1.8 or 2.0 should be cheaply and easily got.

Stick a Hayabusa engine in it and do it right.

Huge demand for them at the moment. Prices have went silly.

Plenty of other powerful bike engines available for a lightweight buggy vs a diesel from a 4x4.

    Very lightweight and big power

Nice engine suggestions but it's not peak power I need its low down torque, the Landrover engined one we have now pulls from real low down with no inter cooler and tweaked pump.

Isuzu 2.8td is a good lump if you can find one.

Geared correctly a 2.0 petrol will be plenty torquey enough.
Bike engined stuff is a pain, chain drive is difficult to make work properly with reverse and most make power high up in the revs.
Fine for street stuff like Caterhams not for offroad.
Honda B series are cheap enough and strong engines

Please make a build thread for this! It sounds epic!

There's an m135 twin turbo engine on donedeal, 400nm of torque should do!
