MF135 Bolt types.

    Hi,

    I was looking for a tap and die set as have to do some rethreading on a Massey Ferguson 135 that is being restored. I want to first clean up the wheel studs as some threads damaged. I got a manual online and it mentions BSW, BSF which I presume are the old British standards. The manual also mentions UNC and UNF, to me this is the American Imperial standard. What type of tap and die set should I be looking for. It's a 1965 Massey Ferguson 135. If I get an UNC/UNF will that work for BSW/BSF.

    No, they are different thread pitches I'm afraid. UNC and UNF are the US and UK standard since the 50's iirc. 'Unified National Coarse' and fine... Anything on a 135 will be UNC or UNF.

    Thanks for that. I will get a UNC/UNF tap set. Just curious BSW/BSF is that an old british standard used before the 50's

    Yeah, BSW is often called Whitworth. You'd find it on old Morris cars and the like. There was a trade agreement for automotive use between UK and US, so they had the same thread pitch. I think other sectors went standardised before that..Also lead to the sizing of spanners and sockets being AF 'across the flat' - not the bolt diameter.
